1931 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
WOOD, Elizabeth Billings "Betsy" Age 85, of Manchester-by-the Sea and Ipswich, MA on July 8, 2016. She is survived by her sister, Frances Gillett, of Woodstock VT. She adored her five nieces and nephews, Deborah Roecker of Rexford NY, Ralph Gillett of Arundel ME, Hamilton Gillett of Windsor VT, Amy Richardson of Wenham MA, and Carol Gambino of Hamilton MA. She is also survived by nine great-nieces and nephews (Geoffrey Roecker, Gretchen Roecker, Chalmers Congdon, Meryl Congdon, Eliza Congdon, Daniel Congdon, Alexander Gambino, Elizabeth Edgerton, and Philip Gambino) and three great-great nieces and nephews (Samuel Congdon, Katherine Congdon, and Lincoln Edgerton). They were the light of her life. Betsy lit up the youth of her nieces and nephews as well, from wild rides and loud singing in a succession of flashy convertibles, ice cream right before dinner, beach walks, trips to New York City, Tonka trucks and dolls, an uproarious laugh and most of all, unconditional love. She never met a No Trespassing sign that she felt was meant for her, and this led to many excellent adventures. Betsy graduated from Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill in 1948, and from Wheelock College in Boston in 1952. After teaching kindergarten in Rochester NY and East Hartford CT, she had a long career in Human Resources, working at Kendall Mills in Walpole, MITRE Corporation in Bedford, Beverly Hospital in Beverly, and the Massachusetts Department of Personnel Administration in Boston. Following "retirement", she operated a local solo taxi service for many years, called Bet on Bet. According to her wishes, no funeral or memorial service will be held. Those who wish to may make a memorial donation to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Plane West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445, Attn: Contribution Services. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly. Online condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com. Campbell Funeral Home Beverly, MA
