1924 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
SMITH, Eugene J. 92, of Newbury, Plum Island, died Wednesday, July 13, in Newburyport. Smith was born May 19, 1924, in Somerville, to the late Eugene F. Smith and Anna Belban. After graduating from Medford High School in 1941, he attended Hebron Academy in Hebron, Maine. Smith entered the U.S. Army in June 1943, and served in the 78th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, including at the Battle of the Huertgen Forest, the longest single battle ever fought by the U.S. Army. Following the end of the war, Smith coached the 78th Division hockey team in Germany. After returning to the U.S., Smith graduated from Dartmouth College in 1949, before earning a master's degree at the Columbia School of Journalism. He worked as a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune and Wall Street Journal before joining the New York Times as a business reporter in 1955, where he remained for 22 years. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made, in Gene's name, to the Scott Smith Memorial Scholarship, Hebron Academy, Hebron, Maine 04238.
