During this last week, Stephanie and I have been invited to give a presentation of our Olympic research at Newnham College, Cambridge, England and so Florence has been very much in our minds. How grateful we are to have made the trip to the US and preserved Florence's view about the women's 800 metres of 1928 - a race of huge importance to women's sporting history. Our thoughts are with John,Joan and family at this anniversary of Florence's passing. With kind regards, Anita.

We are Olympic historians and visited Florence in August 2003. With the help of her son John and his wife Joan, we were able to capture the important memories and, we hope, the spirit of a remarkable woman. As the last survivor of the womens 800 metres of 1928, which resulted in the banning of distance running for women in the Olympics until 1960,it was imperative that Florence's view was on record. We are so very pleased that we were able to travel from the UK and ensure history has access to Florence's opinion on this race.
During our visit, we found Florence, despite her disabilities, to be generous, funny and insightful. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. We also wish Florence well on the next stage of her journey.

Sorry for your loss. I recognized the name in the obituaries and wondered whether it was the same Florence MacDonald from Needham who was on that 1928 Olympic team along with my aunt Rena MacDonald from Dedham. Sorry I didn't have a chance to know her.
