DAVIS, Francis J. Col. (Ret.)

"Frank" Born in Watertown, MA, 28 March 1930, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, 8 June. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Theresa "Terry" Nora (nee Kelly) from Dublin, Ireland and his brothers Joseph Davis of Fall River, MA and Paul Davis of Boston, MA. Preceded in death by his sister Kathleen (John) Broadley and his brother John Davis. He grew up in Woburn, MA residing at 6 Gregg Street, the eldest son of Frank and Kathleen (Hegarty) Davis. Frank graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1951 attaining a degree in Electrical Engineering and subsequently served the United States in a distinguished military career spanning 26 years in the Signal Corps. He won the Army Soldiers Medal for heroism by extinguishing an atomic bomb that had caught on fire at White Sands Proving Ground. He served in both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He taught as an associate professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point in the electrical engineering department, the only non West Point graduate in this department at that time. Frank served in various military commands and staffs including Brigade Commander of U.S. Army Signal School, the Defense Communications Agency and The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) J6 Section at the Pentagon. He left the Army and joined Chase Manhattan Bank in their telecommunications section and was instrumental in the design and implementation of their automatic data processing communications. He retired to Spring Hill, FL where he and Terry lived for many years. He was a pragmatic thinker and would repair any broken mechanical or electrical device, never losing his fascination for how things worked. Frank loved and reveled in solving cryptograms and mathematical puzzles. He and Terry raised six children and have fifteen grandchildren. Paul and Maureen Davis (Sarah, Ian, Emma, Hannah) of Traverse City, MI, Kelly and Suzie Davis (Kadie, Tucker) of Glen Gardner, NJ, Tracey Davis (Tess, Jack) of Downers Grove, IL, Chris and Michelle Davis (Jerney, Madison) of Alexandria, VA, Betsey Davis-McCoy (Harrison, Summer, Charlotte) of Florham Park, NJ and Mary Davis McGinley (Kit, Connor) of Greensboro, NC.
