Frank and I go way back. We worked together at UMUC - Asia for a quarter of a century, since 1985. During all that time he was a colleague to be admired, a friend to be relied upon. Everyone loved him and with good reason. Frank was brilliant, magnanimous, cheerful, and kind. His kindness was not now-and-then; it was his nature. "With malice toward none, with charity for all"; Lincoln's phrase is the one I think of when I think of Frank--which I do, often. I remember him smiling, chuckling, laughing out loud at some outrageous pun. Frank knew how to tell a joke. More than most of us--or at least more than me--he also knew how to tell the truth, but without the sting. God bless him, he knew how to be Frank.

I have read the guestbook entries and even though I haven't seen Frankie since the 1970's, I will miss him. I miss seeing the whole family. Memories are wonderful things.

I taught with Frank in Yokota from 1997-2001, and I have worked for him for him as an online instructor for the last 3 years.
I think often about how kind Frank was to me during my time in Asia. On the nights that we would teach together at Yokota, I would seek Frank out during the breaks to chat with him. I always looked forward to teaching at Yokota because I knew we would have some time to chat.
Over the last few years working for Frank as an online instructor, most of my contact with him has been through email. But I did call him last Spring, and it was the first time we had spoken in 10 years. It seemed like old times again. We spoke about the changes that had occurred in UMUC since I had left Asia, and about one of our favorite topics, Sumo Wrestling.
I'm thankful for having had the chance to meet Frank and will always remember his kindness and thoughtfulness.

I was fortunate to know and work with Frank Gualtieri in Japan from 1997 to 2001. He was always positive, supportive, and never lacked for humor or intelligence. I liked his photobug habit. May he rest in peace.

I woke up this morning thinking about Frank Gualtieri and was wondering what he was doing post H.S. graduation. Was he a Dr. we all thought he would become? As a former classmate with Frank @ CHS the only class that we shared was computer programing, with Stan the Man Mr. Masalsky, when the computer took up most of the room. I was so amazed how he could grasp the concepts presented to us and do it so effortlessly. I still visualize that moment in class like it was yesterday. I thought he was special in his own unassuming way.
I did a Google search to learn that he had passed on and had enriched so many people in ways that made a positive difference in their lives. Sounds like Frank. It's funny how one small memory can trigger a curious inquiry.
My heartfelt sympathy to the Gualtieri family. Frank made a difference in my life.

To Mr. Gualtieri's family; Frank was a dedicated and hard-working member of the Wikimedia community, where he edited regularly and uploaded many, many exquisite photographs which he shared freely with the world. His legacy will live on to be admired and enjoyed by people worldwide. We'll miss him on Wikipedia and on Commons. My condolence to his family.

Mr. Gualtieri uploaded hundreds of wonderful photographs that he took to Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Fg2/gallery). Many of those photos are linked to articles in Wikipedia, where they will help enrich the learning experience of others for a long time to come. As a fellow Wikipedia editor, I enjoyed collaborating with Mr. Gualtieri (username Fg2) on topics related to Japan. My condolences on his passing.

I only discovered Frank's real name today and I am saddened by the news of his sudden passing. I am a Wikipedia editor, as he was, and I must say he will be impossible to replace. His culture and character being what they were, I relied on him often. He was always kind and quick to help.

It was in Okinawa 23 years ago that Frank and I started our tour in Japan as colleagues at UMUC.
My impression of Frank was someone calm, compassionate, and kind who listened well to others. To recall an episode of the first week when we arrived at Kadena base in Okinawa, a typhoon hit with torrential rains, and we were trapped in the B.O.Q for two days without food. Frank came to my room to share his last bowl of cereal with me.
During our free time, we enjoyed shopping, walks, and eating out. We also went sightseeing together and made jokes in Japanese from time to time. In Misawa, Frank became one of my “sushi brothers” along with my other colleagues at UMUC in Asia.
I am saddened to hear that he is no longer with us. I will miss him a lot.
My sincere condolences to his family

To the Gualtieri Family,
You have my deepest sympathy at the loss of your son, brother, and friend.
As a UMUC-Asia faculty member, I have had the pleasure of knowing Frank since 1998. When I think of him, the following words come to mind: warm, friendly, considerate, funny, intelligent, talented, and gifted.
The world is a better place because of Frank and I am a better person for having known him. I will miss him dearly.

Though I first encountered Frank many years ago, while working for UMUC on Okinawa, I never had the pleasure of knowing him personally.
However, in the last 7 years, while teaching for Asia's DE program, I have had the pleasure of developing a professional relationship with Frank which is matched by very few others that I can recall over my 17 years with UMUC.
Frank was not only the utmost professional, but he was caring, supportive and helpful - always willing to listen and to do what he could to help his staff and faculty move through difficulty and change.
Frank was a hard worker and innovator who took the program to ever higher levels of efficiency and effectiveness. He gave his all for all of us, and for that he will be truly missed and never forgotten.
My condolences to all whose lives he has so deeply touched.

I have little to add, other than my sincerest condolences to Frank's family. This was a shock to so many of us . . . yet one perhaps somehow tempered by what has been so well said about him.

I met Frank twenty-three years ago in Okinawa when we started to teach together. Throughout the years I enjoyed his ever-present humor, intellect and excellent photography. After he moved to Yokota, I would often run into Frank and visit with him while on the way back to the States. Frank always had time for all his many friends. I know that Frank must have everyone in Heaven all organized and in good spirits making God's work much easier as he practiced the same thing on earth. I thank God for sending Frank across my life's path.

I'd known Frank for about twenty years as a friend, and as a colleague at various levels of interaction and in a variety of locations. I squired him around Seoul when he visited, and we'd converge in Japan when I was there. He was a true gentleman who was always a pleasure to be with.
I could always depend on thoughtful, interesting conversation when I was with him. The conversation might range from photography, to cosmology, Japan, daily living, work, and whatever else might enter our minds. You know, the kinds of things friends kick around.
He was a teacher in many ways.
I miss Frank, and will not forget him.

Frank was an inspiration for all those who worked with him. He was extremely competent, kind, thoughtful and always so helpful. I first me Frank in Iwakuni, Japan more than 15 years ago when he would periodically visit to teach math classes. Later, he was one of my mentors as I learned the ropes of teaching in the distance education format. I will miss him. My heart goes out to all of his family, friends and colleagues.

By conventional measures, I barely knew Frank, having worked with him in connection with distance education the last three years, but from my brief encounters here in Japan I know that what others have written rings true. It did not take long to realize that Frank was a very special human being. I was pleased that those of us in Asia were able to attend a memorial service in his honor.

Many years ago I met Frank as a colleague and a student in my Japanese Culture classes. His enthusiasm for Japanese culture never died as can be seen by his wonderul pictures. As Director of our Distance Studies he was always kind, thoughtful and understanding of those with whom he worked. His sudden passing was a great shock to all of us who loved him as a friend. We pray for him and his family. May he rest in peace.

I was so shocked to hear that we had lost Frank. I worked with and for him over the past decade, both at UMUC and at JEOL. What an infectious laugh and what a genuinely kind person. His personality is infused in the DE program and I feel his absence every time I log on. He was a brilliant guy and a great guy and I am proud to have called him a friend.

I only knew Frank online working with him in the Distance Education Program with the University of Maryland, University College. He did me many favors during those years and taught me how to use the Webtycho system most efficiently. His online office door was always open. Honestly, I will miss him though I never really knew him.

To the Gualtieri Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I had the privilege of working with Frank as a DE instructor during the last year, and will miss him dearly. He was one of the first to welcome me to Asia, and was one of the most enjoyable people to work with I've ever encountered.
I am glad that I got to spend some time with him in College Park in August, and I am sorry that he is gone.

To the Gualtieri Family,
I’ve been searching for the right words to say for days now, but to no avail. All I can say is that my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this heartbreaking time.
I’ve been working with Frank for almost seven years now, while the last three or so as his assistant. The two things that Frank and I had most in common were our love for Japan, and our love and dedication to our UMUC Distance Education Program. His heart was firmly planted in both of these worlds, and his impact and legacy will be felt by many for years to come.
You should know that Frank was a good man, loving son and brother, and a wonderful colleague to work with. I miss him very much, but I will always have fond and happy memories of our time together.

As a mathematician and UMUC professor, Frank was like a brother to me. He and I would spend some time in his office bouncing mathematical and pedagogical ideas off of each other. He made some seemingly perfect demonstration videos complete with his calm and reassuring voice on various items. Who knows how many takes he took to get it right. In demonstration videos of my own, I tried to be just as seemingly perfect as his was, but never could match him, I think! Meanwhile, he always seemed to be able to drop the 1000 things that he was doing in order to grant me his full attention when I needed it. The last time I saw Frank was in June 2009 when I wanted to see whether or not if he needed to staff a math d. e. class. Many a time, he was able to do it and for that, I am grateful for his help. Thank you very much, Frank, for your help as well as your generosity and tireless patience that you shared with your colleagues!

The Frank Gualtieri...I knew from 1996 to 2007 in Tokyo...at Yokota. Was a
very-very decent person. Yes...he was
unusually bright and highly accomplished.
But...he was simply an unusually decent human being.
Maryland was most fortunate to have had his services for so many years.

Beth and Vinnie; John and Lynne; Maria and John - we joke about our "favorite" Gualtieri. All of you spoke with absolute reverence about Frank (the "smartest" Gualtieri!). We have to conclude that he was your "favorite" Gualtieri. What a terrible injustice to have him taken so soon from your lives, and from the world. Our thoughts and prayers are with you , and with your family.

Frank and I corresponded for over ten years by e-mail, mostly about photography. I could always rely on his amazing technical knowledge.
During those years, we shared many photographic images, and his comments were always invaluable.
I will greatly miss him.

Frank was one of the first people I met at UMUC Asia when I started teaching in Japan over 8 years ago. His common roots in Boston, and schools like Harvard/MIT made us feel like long-time friends from the start.
Even when I started teaching online, Frank again was a familiar and welcoming presence even through the computer. These days when I send logistic emails, I sense a strange emptiness out there in the world of internet, knowing that I will not receive a friendly, prompt, supportive and encouraging response from my former Director of DE anymore.
I feel very fortunate to have known Frank, even for this very short period of time. Capable, kind and generous people like him make all of us want to be better people ourselves, and better educators and administrators as well. Iron sharpens iron, just as excellence breeds more excellence. Although my heart is very heavy at the start of this new academic school year, I will strive to do even better than I have for Frank's sake and his legacy here at UMUC Asia DE. To say I miss him is a gross understatement. I do sincerely hope that his close friends and family will find some encouragement from our notes, knowing that his life and service made a significant impact in ours and the lives of our students, also.
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Frank was a wonderful colleague here at UMUC Asia. He was intelligent, cheerful, and very helpful. He took on very difficult technical tasks that others shied away from, and often made us laugh.
The last time I saw him was a quick visit in July to his office to ask him some questions about photography and thank him for doing me a small favor. Though he was busy, he took the time to talk with me.
Although I've known him for a few years, I regret not knowing him better.
My deepest sympathy to Frank's family and friends for their loss.

I worked with Frank for a number of years in Maryland's Asian Division and deeply regret his surprised passing. I can't say enough good about Frank: his intelligence, his learning, his delightful personality and his easy going manner, his willingness to take any assignment and his warm kindness towards everyone. He spoke often and proudly of his parents. He joked often about the Red Sox and gave me a key chain map with a representation of Boston as the only city from ocean to ocean, which key chain I have kept to this day with the best of memories. He was and still is a credit to his family, his schools and the city which he loved so much. I and many, many others will be praying for him. Might he do the same for us.
