FRED BARHOFF Obituary

BARHOFF, Fred William, III Passed away peacefully on May 6th at the age of 87. He was the beloved husband of Jacqueline (White) Barhoff, the two just having celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They lived in Plymouth, MA, formerly of West Hartford, CT. He is survived by his three children: Karen Barhoff Dillon and husband Luke of Boston, MA, Jeffrey William Barhoff and wife Julie of Washington, D.C., and Jane Barhoff Ypsilantis and husband Mark of Arlington, MA. The couple were blessed with eight grandchildren: Christopher Dillon, Jennifer Milligan, Kelly Gleason, Alexia Barhoff, William Barhoff, Luke Ypsilantis, Petra Ypsilantis, and Caterina Ypsilantis.

Fred was born in Hartford, CT on July 11th, 1930 to Fred William Barhoff, Jr. and Elizabeth Mary (McKone) Barhoff. He was brother to the late Elizabeth Pennock and Barbara Irwin, and survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He graduated from Kingswood School in 1948, and was named to the School's Athletic Hall of Fame for his key role as quarterback of the 1945 undefeated, untied football team. Fred was class of 1952 at Yale University, majoring in American studies. There he played handball, baseball, and football, and was a member of Chi Phi and Wolf's Head Honors Society. Fred then completed Officer's Candidate School in New London, CT and served as a Lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard until 1954. Fred and Jackie were married in Dwight Chapel at Yale in 1953.

Shoreline Industries in CT is where Fred began his professional career in manufacturing. He then worked for a decade at WR Grace Company in NJ, as GM of the Daily Division. In 1967 they moved to Hingham, MA where he worked for Brockton Sole & Plastics. In 1969 the family relocated to Ann Arbor, MI, where Fred was GM for the Uniloy Division of Hoover Ball & Bearing. His team there was instrumental in developing the first plastic milk bottle. In 1978 Fred moved the family back to the East Coast, where he became VP of Manufacturing for Gloucester Engineering. At the age of 50, Fred and his son Jeff founded New England Mold, an injection mold manufacturing company with two locations in Sterling, MA and Cromwell, CT.

Fred was an ardent reader and an avid tennis player into his 80s. He was a devoted sports fan, enjoying collegiate sporting events but above-all, a passionate Red Sox fan. He served for many years as a member of the vestry at St. James's Episcopal Church in West Hartford, CT. Fred's family meant the world to him. He eagerly looked forward to hosting gatherings and took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on May 22nd at 11am, at St. James's Episcopal Church in West Hartford, at 1018 Farmington Avenue. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Fairview Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at Kingswood Oxford School. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. James Episcopal Church or Kingswood Oxford School. Fred was a wonderful friend, I think of the times he'd beat me at tennis even though he was 17 yrs older than I. And he was sore...but, so was I!

Now that I'm 70, I will always remember what Fred said to me after 3 tough sets of singles. I asked Fred if he was sore(I was only 55)and he remarked: "Of course I'm sore...but I'm always sore, since I'm 70...so, I might as well play tennis." Fred is an inspiration! Ernie Zike

With heartfelt sympathy to the family. May fond memories of your loved one comfort you at this time. Please consider Psalm 145:18, 19. May those words bring you some consolation and a small measure of peace.

Carolyn and Bill send condolences to Jackie and the kids. Lots of fun times in Hingham, Cape Cod, West Hartford, Boxford and Plymouth. Miss him already despite getting together only once a year, after our move to Florida. Boola, boola!

Mr. Barhoff was one of my favorite dads of my Ann Arbor gang of friends. He took me along with the family to Cape Cod - one of my all time favorite childhood vacations. ( I remember he wasn't too pleased when he found out we were hitchhiking in Cape Cod)
Thinking of the Barhoff family at this very tough time.

So sorry for your loss. So many memories of the time in Ann Arbor, but my fondest always goes back to tennis at the Racquet Club. No one could volley like Fred (no time for a backhand - just right-handed, then left-handed!) What a wonderful man. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you.

Jackie & Kids: We are so sorry. Fred was a wonderful friend, excellent tennis player(never playing "Client" tennis), and cultured party giver. After playing three sets of singles, I asked him if he was sore(I was only 53), and he said: "I'm 70 and always sore, I might as well play tennis". Fred will be missed!
