Fred and I finished high-school together in San Diego and became best friends. We were both transplants with adventurous spirits and traveled together to fill our cups with whatever two teenagers could get their hands on. Fred was unassuming. He was kind. He was honest, proud and loyal. We kept in touch as the years progressed and he even came to visit me in northern California which impressed me with the values he held. We pursued our own lives on separate coasts and spoke less and less but never left my thoughts. He called me during his final months to give me his devastating news. At the time I was entrenched in my own issues of a young family and a child with medical issues and failed to express all the things that in hindsight I would have and should have said. It was of course the kind of news noone expects to hear at such a young age. Fred never left my heart and was a part of some of my greatest memories. I'm sorry I never met you, Claudia, but he did take the opportunity to speak of you and his sincerity was more than clear. I do hope life has brought you some balance in the form of joy as I'm sure that's what Fred would wish for you. It was my mistake having never thought to type his name into Google until I was telling my wife a story of one of our trips, for the 3rd time, and I finally took the step of seeing what would appear in a search. I'm glad I did as I feel the closure we all seek when something ends, has never been there for me and I feel it's never too late to offer my most sincere condolences to you and all who loved him.

Dear Claudia,
Fred used to confide in me all the time. We would tell each other stuff we never told anyone else. When he talked about you, it was like poetry, Boston-Fred style. :^D
He was so in love with you. He told me that you were beautiful, and loving. He told me that he had no idea there were women like you on this planet.
He admired your strength. I believe it is what kept him going. If he didn't have you he wouldn't have been around as long as he was.
There was one time, he was having a very tough time with Chemo, and he said he felt like he didn't want to continue going on, but your love and strength opened his eyes.
He told me that the reason he wasn't giving up, is because you never gave up. You had your illness, and even when you were feeling your worst, you supported Fred through his illness. He thought you were tough as nails for that.
You were a godsend for Fred. I really hope everyone who knew and loved Fred knows that. You took care of him.
A lot of spouses would get scared and not be able to handle such a tough situation.
Not you. You continued to be there for him. Down to the final days when you were on crutches. You still did your very best to make sure he was comfortable and happy.
He said this to me once. "I want to spend the rest of my life with Claudia. I hope you can find a soul mate like I did. Because, believe me. I have never been so happy."
I am so sad that he is gone, but I am so happy that he got his wish to spend the rest of his life with you.

To Fred Ciampi and Family,
I just wanted you to know that I am thinking of you in your time of sorrow. Please accept my deepest sympathy at what I know is a very difficult time for you and your family.
Words are poor things when we suffer the loss of a loved one. Still I want to convey my desire, however inadequate, to offer consolation.
Wish I could be up there in Massachusetts with you and Jean and to young Fred's wife to offer support.
With Affection, Rose (Franciosa) Sisti

Thank you all for your kind wishes. As is true in so many tragically untimely deaths, Fred should have had a lifetime to manage his finances, however the cancer devastated us financially. There is also a foundation to cover Fred's outstanding bills. Please contact his wife,
-Claudia deHaven Biddle-Ciampi at 617-905-7301 to arrange a donation. Much appreciated.
