HARRIET BERING Obituary

Bering, Harriet Aldrich

Beloved wife of the late Edgar A. Bering, Jr., M.D., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 21, at the age of 91. Formerly of Brookline, MA, and Oxford, MD, she lived in Winchester, MA. She was born in New York City and attended the Chapin and Foxcroft Schools. She was one of a small number of women to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 1940s. During World War II, she moved back to New York and graduated from Barnard College in the class of 1944. As a young woman, she worked as a research associate in physical chemistry at the Harvard Medical School. There she met her late husband, a pediatric neurosurgeon. They were married for fifty years until his death in 1994. Throughout her life, she was active on the boards of many organizations, including the United Way of Greater Boston, the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, ME, and the Children's Hearing and Speech Center, in Washington, DC, where she served as Chair of the board. Mrs. Bering was a daughter of Harriet Alexander Aldrich and Winthrop W. Aldrich. Mr. Aldrich was Chairman of the Board of the Chase National Bank. He served as Ambassador to the Court of St. James's under President Eisenhower. She is survived by her daughter Harriet Bering, M.D., of Lexington, MA, and sons Edgar A. Bering, III, of Houston, TX, and Charles C. Bering, of Watertown, MA. She leaves two sisters, Lucy A. Burr, of Mystic, CT., Liberty A. Redmond, of Bethesda, MD, and a brother, Alexander Aldrich, of Saratoga Springs, NY. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Mary A. Homans. She is also survived by six grandchildren, a step-grandson, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. The family invites friends to a service on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Church Of The Good Shepherd, 9 Russell Avenue (at the corner of Mt. Auburn St.) in Watertown, at 2:00 pm. Mrs. Bering will be buried next to her late husband in Islesboro, Maine. The family asks that donations in her name go to The Beacon Project, which provides eldercare services. Beacon Project, Islesboro, ME 04848, or http://www. islesborobeacon.org/donate/. Arrangements under the care of DeVito Funeral Homes.
