Obituary Condolences

Husband of the late Jane Goss Cortes, died April 2, 2005 at his home in Wellfleet, surrounded by family members. He was born in Sewanee, TN in 1916, later lived in Houston and Dallas, TX, and summered, and eventually retired in Wellfleet. Mr. Cortes was a graduate of Sewanee Military Academy and the University of Texas. He also studied at the University of the South and attended the graduate Paleontology Program at the University of Oklahoma. Following his service as a Naval Officer in World War II, Mr. Cortes worked in oil exploration for Humble Oil Company, and later owned and operated an outdoor advertising agency in Dallas, TX. He was an avid sailor, boater, tennis player, golfer, motorcyclist and traveler. His memberships included the Dallas Country Club, the Dallas Athletic Club, SERTOMA, Eastward Ho! Country Club, SAE Fraternity and the Chequessett Yacht & Country Club in Wellfleet, where he served as Golf Chairman and on the Board of Governors. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Dallas and the First Congregational /United Church of Christ in Wellfleet. Mr. Cortes is survived by his son Henry G. Cortes of Brooklyn, NY, and Wellfleet, his daughter Sarah C. Dorr of Gulfport, FL, and Wellfleet, and two grandchildren, Sarah and Nicholas Cortes. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Congregational/United Church of Christ in Wellfleet at 12 Noon on Thursday, April 7, 2005. Burial will be Private. Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Associations Senior Fund or the Visiting Nurse Association's Honey Kelly Fund, both, care of the Visiting Nurse Association, 434 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660.
