JANE (DEXTER) GREENSPAN Obituary
GREENSPAN, Jane (Dexter) Died on September 6, 2013, at Cape Cod Hospital, after a brief illness. She was seventy years old. Jane is survived by her loving husband Richard and by her beloved children Nathaniel and Elizabeth. As a child, growing up in Cambridge, Jane watched her neighbor Julia Child trim the high hedges that bordered her property, and thus began a lifelong fascination with the original French Chef. In 1947, at the age of 5, Janes family moved to Cohasset. However, Jane always retained her affection for the Cambridge that she experienced in her youth. Jane was a graduate of Derby Academy, Wheelock College, and Tufts University where she received the MS degree in Social Work with an emphasis on treatment of children. She worked at the Judge Baker Clinic and then at the Brookside Clinic in Jamaica Plain before entering private practice. Janes patients always came first and she chose to continue working even when her declining health made it difficult for her to do so. Jane was a superb cook, with a diverse range of culinary interests and an extensive collection of cooking literature, but she remained focused on the classical French cuisine that she learned to love through Julia Child. She adored the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was pleased to get subscription seats in the same first row balcony that she had first enjoyed as a student. Her family accompanied her to every performance of The Revels from 1978 onwards. Jane loved her summer house in Wellfleet. She was an avid reader who spent many enjoyable hours at the Wellfleet Library, and the numerous local art galleries. Jane was also active in the year-round community of Cape families, taking great pleasure in their annual celebrations. Jane was a strong person who was never shy with her opinion, but she was also a remarkably kind woman with a vast network of friends. During the last twenty years of her life she was increasingly disabled, but carried on resolutely. A Memorial Service will be held at the former St. Lukes and St. Margarets Church in Allston on Saturday, October 5th at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay or to the Wellfleet Public Library.
