1932 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
WHITE, Joan Elaine 84, of Norfolk, passed peacefully at home on June 3, 2016. She was the beloved wife of Robert F. White. Born on March 29, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Vaughan and Myrtle (Dixon) Richardson. Born premature at 1 lb. 14 oz, she was for many years the smallest baby to be born and survive at Newton Wellesley Hospital. Joan graduated from Waltham High where she played trumpet in the band. She later graduated from the Sargent College at Boston University with a degree in Physical Education. While there she created great friendships that lasted a lifetime. She taught physical education in Princeton, NJ and Amherst, MA and married in 1956. Joan and Bob raised their family in Worcester and Holden and shared many memories at the extended family cottage in Deerfield, NH. They retired to Eastham, MA and spent the winter in Englewood, FL. Three years ago they moved to Norfolk, MA. She loved golf, gardening, bowling, boating, playing cards, puzzles & spending time at the beach. Her greatest joy was her family. Family gatherings and holiday get togethers were her favorite times. Her grandchildren brought much happiness and pride to her. After being diagnosed with cancer, she showed us all courage and strength deeper than we could ever imagine. In addition to her husband Bob, Joan is survived by three children; Cheryl Holenko and her husband John of Martha's Vineyard, David White and his wife Kathy of Franklin Lakes, NJ, and Lynn Riley and her husband Kevin of Millis, a brother; Gerald Richardson and his wife Freda of Kittery Point, Maine, many grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Janet Davidson. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Tuesday, June 7th at 2 PM at the Federated Church of Norfolk, 1 Union Street, Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to: Federated Church of Norfolk, PO Box 315, Norfolk, MA 02056, or Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, www.danafarbergiving.org.
