JOAN FLYNN CASHMAN Obituary
CASHMAN, Joan Flynn May 29, 1930 - August 10, 2018 Joan Flynn Cashman died at home on August 10, 2018, at the age of 88. She was the wife of the late Charles C. Cashman, Sr. and mother of Rosemary, Charles (wife: Debbie), Christopher (wife: Linda), Michael (wife: Cathy), Cara (husband: Tom Connelly), and James (wife: Kate). Her parents were Dr. William A. Flynn and Rosemary Carr Flynn. Her sisters were Rosemary Flynn Cashman and Roberta (Bobbi) Flynn. She was a grandmother, aunt, cousin, in-law, and friend of many. She graduated from Regis College. Joan lived in Amesbury her entire life, and was raised until age 11 in a downtown home where her father had his doctor's office. Her parents built a home in another section of town in 1941, and that's where Joan remained for more than 75 years. She and her two sisters - the so-called "Flynn Sisters" - were a close-knit bunch, taking care of children together, chatting over coffee frequently, and sharing much laughter. Although her husband died after a much-too-brief marriage of 21 years, Joan carried on by raising their six children, getting them through college, welcoming grandkids, and working at the Amesbury News and Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce. She liked watching and reading stories about World War II, the Kennedys, and the Titanic. She and her brother-in-law, George, were so immersed in the history of the Titanic that she often said that it felt like they both went down with the ship. Joan was a big fan of the Red Sox. When she attended a game several years ago with some of her children, the Sox won. The Yankees should have known better - they had no chance of winning with Joan in the crowd. A Red Sox flag flies high on the flag pole in the backyard as she anticipated another World Series trophy this October. The home where Joan lived for most of her life was just that - a home. It was a place full of joyous noise with kids scattered in and out, a place for wedding receptions in the backyard, including her own, and a place for festive Christmas Eve parties with plenty of Lobster Newburg and oyster stew. Most of all, Joan's home was a place where she delighted in her family and friends, and they responded in kind. Arrangements: The funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Parish Church, 9 Sparhawk Street, Amesbury. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by E. V. Jutras and Sons Funeral Home in AMESBURY.
