Obituary Condolences

TENENBAUM, Johanna Butler, Ph.D. Educator Of South Boston, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2018. A life long resident of South Boston, Dr. Butler taught at Worcester State College for many years. Having graduated from St. Augustine's School and Emmanuel College, Joan did advanced studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, Princeton University, and received her PH.D from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She received many academic honors including a Fullbright Scholarship. A member of the South Boston Sports Hall of Fame, she was an expert swimmer and championship basketball player at the Boys and Girls Club. As an adult she continued her athletic interests playing tennis, hiking and doing other outdoor activities. She loved music, playing violin, flute and tin whistle as well as singing with the St. Augustine and St. Monica choirs and the Castle Island Association Choral Group and spending time in her garden. Most of all Joan will be remembered for her quiet generosity. She volunteered for years with homeless women at the Sancta Maria House in Boston. She welcomed friends, family and acquaintances into her home and helped many to complete their education. Joan was predeceased by her husband Irving for whom she provided care for 15 years following a catastrophic auto accident. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Anna (Crowley) Butler and his survived by her sister Mary T. Fagan of South Boston, nephews John, James, Joseph and Thomas Fagan, their wives, 9 great nephews and nieces, multiple God children and many loving friends. Visiting hours in the O'Brien Funeral Home, 146 Dorchester St., SOUTH BOSTON, Friday from 4-8PM. Funeral Mass in Gate of Heaven Church, 615 East Fourth St., South Boston, Saturday at 10:00AM. Interment Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the St. Augustine 200th Anniversary Cemetery Fund c/o of St. Brigid Parish, 841 East Broadway, South Boston, MA 02127.
