COYNE, Dr. John Andrew, Sr. Of Wellesley, Mass., passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 9, with his family by his side. Born in 1934 in Brookline, MA to John Anthony Coyne M.D. and Jennie "Jane" Kellogg Coyne, Dr. Coyne was the youngest of three children. He graduated from Brookline High School, Harvard University and the University of Virginia School of Medicine. After graduating Air Force basic training, he spent three years in the service where he received his aeronautical rating (jet), culminating in two years on Kumeshima Island, Japan, near Okinawa, as a captain and lead radar operator. Dr. Coyne completed his medical residency at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1966, becoming an associate surgeon at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and Instructor in Surgery at the Harvard Medical School. Over the years, he was affiliated with Cambridge City Hospital, MIT Health Services, Harvard Community Health Plan, Mount Auburn Hospital and Harvard University Health Systems. Since childhood, he spent his summers at a family camp in Central Maine where he developed a passion for wildlife and the outdoors. An amateur ornithologist, he had an encyclopedic knowledge of North American birds. His hobbies involved working with his hands and he was an avid handyman, converting two "fixer-uppers" in Maine into summer cottages for his children. He relished problem solving and always had a home improvement project in the works. He met his wife Mary Frances Downey while working at the surgical research labs at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and the two celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary this June. In addition to his wife, Dr. Coyne leaves two children and their spouses, Carolyn Marie & William P. Dykema, John Andrew, Jr. & Kimberly Stimmel Coyne, along with eight grandchildren; David , Julia, Andrew, John A. III, Aubrey, Michael, James and Lydia.
