Obituary Condolences

PHINNEY, John F. 83, of East Falmouth, Ma, passed away peacefully at home on June 12, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Affectionately known as "Jocko" and the "Magnificent One," John was born and raised in West Roxbury, the second son of Mary (Campbell) and Gus Phinney's four children, and where he and his loving wife of 58 years, Betty (Elizabeth Denault), raised their family of six children. John was passionate about the rights of workers and was a long standing member of Local 1445 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, where he served as a business agent and ultimately as its President. He travelled the world speaking on the subject of management-labor relations and in 1995 received the Cushing-Gavin Award for demonstrating the highest levels of integrity and commitment while overseeing management-labor relations. John will always be a proud member of the United States Marine Corps (Ooorah!) serving on the front lines during the Korean War and attaining his Sargent's stripes. He was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather leaving three siblings, Joe (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla), Ellie (Springfield, Va) and Richard (Weymouth, Ma), six children John (Wilton, Ct), David (West Roxbury, Ma), Mary (Newtonville, Ma), Joseph (West Roxbury, Ma), Dennis (Deceased-West Roxbury, Ma) and Anne Marie (East Falmouth, Ma), twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. He will be remembered for his kindness and the easy smile he brought to so many. We should all take comfort knowing he will continue to watch-over and provide divine inspiration to all of us. Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be sent to the American Diabetes Foundation. Services to be held on Thursday, June 16th at the Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre Street, WEST ROXBURY, Ma 02132, 4-8 pm, and a mass on Friday, June 17th at St. John's Chrysostom Church, 4750 Washington St., West Roxbury, Ma 02132 at 10am. Interment will be private. For directions & guestbook, please visit: www.gormleyfuneral.com. William J. Gormley Funeral Service 617-323-8600
