1929 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
McCARTHY, John Robert "Bob" Died in Plymouth, MA at the age of 87 after a brief illness. He was born in 1929 in Woburn, Mass., the youngest of three sons of the late Nora (Quinn) McCarthy and James (Ted) McCarthy. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Edward R. McCarthy of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, formerly of Holden, Mass. and Joseph F. McCarthy of Medford, Mass. Bob was educated in the public schools of Medford and Arlington, Mass. and earned bachelors and master's degrees in Mathematics from Boston College. He also did graduate work at MIT (on the G.I. Bill) and The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., the latter on a grant from the National Science Foundation. Toward the end of the Korean War he was drafted into the U. S. Army, and served in the Chemical Corps as a Mathematical Assistant at the Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. In 1956 he began teaching mathematics at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., and continued there until his retirement in 1986. In 1972, Bob married Anna Marie MacDonnell of Springfield, MA and they had 21 wonderful years together until her death from cancer in 1994. They enjoyed the performing arts of Boston, the BSO, and the B.U. Celebrity Series, the Huntington Theater, and especially piano recitals; in their later years, Bob and Anna resumed their study of piano with their dear friend, the late Jean Hull of Westborough, including performing in her annual recitals. They also enjoyed travel, participating in three Elder Hostels in Italy. He is survived by four sisters-in-law, Mary (Mahoney) McCarthy of Portsmouth, RI, Margaret (O'Hearn) McCarthy of Medford, Mass., Claire (MacDonnell) Kelley of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and Joan MacDonnell of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, several McCarthy and MacDonnell nieces and nephews, and his devoted companion and life partner Philip Izzo, who always put Bob's needs ahead of his especially during the final chapter. With Philip he continued his love of travel, visiting many National Parks in the U.S., and accompanying him on business trips to London and Southeast Asia, and three trips to Australia and New Zealand. Survivors also include members of the extended Izzo family. Cremation has taken place. Relatives and Friends are cordially invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of Bob's life at Christ Church Parish (Episcopal), 149 Court Street, Plymouth, MA on August 20, 2016 at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Friends of the Plymouth Pound, P.O. Box 578, Manomet, MA 02345 or at friendsplymouthpound.org.
