SAMUEL, Joseph H. Joseph H. Samuel, Jr., 92, Prominent Boston Jeweler Beverly, MA – Joseph H. Samuel, Jr., an internationally recognized jeweler died peacefully on April 23, 2018 at his home in Beverly. He was the son of Lillian DeYoung and Joseph Samuel of Brookline, MA and the beloved husband of Marie (Freeman) Samuel who predeceased him in July 2009 after 59 years of marriage. Joseph was born in Boston, educated in the Brookline public schools and graduated from Yale University. In 1957 he joined the family jewelry business J. & S.S. DeYoung as the fourth generation to do so. There, alongside his uncle Sydney DeYoung, he was instrumental in turning a specialized regional wholesaler into a nationally and internationally recognized firm with customers throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He served as president from 1986 until his retirement. During the course of his career, Joseph served for many years on the board of governors of the Gemological Institute of America, the leading research and educational organization of the jewelry industry. He was a past president of the Boston Jewelers Club and a former member of the 24 Karat Club of New York. Joseph H. Samuel, Jr. is survived by his three loving children Stuart Samuel, Laurie Mirra, and Janet Levy and their spouses, and seven grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, July 8 at the Rose Garden in Lynch Park, Beverly at 10:30 am.
