Obituary Condolences

LONG, Joseph M. DNEducatorFlag/In-Line IconOf Hingham, formerly of Quincy, age 89, died peacefully, Wednesday, August 17, 2016, at the Carney Hospital in Boston. Joseph was born, raised and educated in Boston. He had lived in Hingham for the past three years, previously in Quincy for over sixty years. Joseph was proud to have served as a Fire Controlman Second Class in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the LST 951 in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. Following his time in the service, Joseph graduated from Boston State Teacher's College in 1951. He began his career in the Milton Public Schools as an industrial arts teacher. In the Quincy Public School system, he was a member of the original faculty of Broad Meadows Middle School, and went on to serve as Principal of Point Webster Middle School and later, Sterling Middle School. Joseph served as a baseball, track, and football coach during his time as an educator. He retired as an administrator for the Quincy Public School system in 1990 with over thirty years of service. Joseph enjoyed wood carving and building fine furniture. Beloved husband of the late Elaine M. (Casey) Long. Devoted father of Suzanne M. Brigham and her husband Stephen C. Brigham, M.D. of St. Michaels, Maryland, Michael J. Long and his wife Sandra of Norwell, and Joseph P. Long and his wife Maureen of Scituate. Loving grandfather of Amy S. Widding and her husband Erik of Boston, Daniel J. Brigham and his wife Teresa Girolamo of Kansas, Caitlin E. Long of Boston, James C. Long of Boston, Brendan T. Long of Scituate, and Kevin J. Long of Scituate. Cherished great grandfather of Anders R. Widding. One of nine siblings, Joseph is survived by Katherine Mattair, Arlene Savasta, both of California, and David Long of Florida, and predeceased by Rosalie Long, SND, Mary Long, SND, Thomas Long, James Long, and John Long. Brother-in-law of Paul R. Casey of Quincy. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, QUINCY Monday, August 22nd at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass in Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy at 10 o'clock. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the funeral home Sunday, 4-7 p.m. Interment, with military honors, in Pine Hill Cemetery, West Quincy.
