Thinking of Sonny this morning as his Anniversary approaches... He truly was a Gem, and I was so lucky to have been able to have a great friendship with him. I remember he was always Joe Tierney Dierdre's Dad. As I became a young adult and entered into the world of Politics Sonny became my friend. I can still hear his laugh and his words of advice. He is always missed.

To the Tierney family,

On 9/30 my father Steven Nager passed away. The Nager family were very fond of Joseph. My grandmother Mildred worked with Joe back in the sixties. She was with Bnai Brith and they helped the Jewish community in Boston get better treatment. Joe stood up against racism next to my Grammy and made a difference. My father loved Mr. Tierney. He believed that change was up to us, one at a time. I met him and his family in Brockton at my family's home for my 6th birthday in 1974. The pictures of our families laughing started with Joe and Grammy cracking jokes that I didn't understand. I know nothing except that he made a difference in so many lives. Seeing Maura on Stand up to Cancer mention her dad was heartfelt. Diabetes took my dad and he was only 64. They both were larger than life and will be loved and missed always. May the entire Tierney family remember the love that is eternal can never die. May GOD bless you tierney's. Always. On 12/14 I'll light a candle for both of our fathers. Dear Deirdre and your family,

I only found out about your loss today from an article by Lawrence Harmon in yesterday's Globe mentioning the "late Joseph Tierney." Please, accept my condolences on your loss, though they are tardy. You can view it as a testimony to how important Joseph was to Boston's history that his name continues to be summoned in Boston politics.

I hope you and your family are well otherwise.

To all the Tierneys.

Reading my newspaper Parade section this morning, I was so happy to read the good news about Maura. On the other hand, I was so saddened to read about Joe. The city of Boston, South Boston and Camp Wing and the family have lost a wonderful person. We will all meet again someday and he will be opening the doors for us.

A great man has left us all too soon, but not before having made the world a better place. His legacy should be taught to students of law, political science, communications , and business, because most of those kids wouldn't even believe that a man can live by the way of "I'm here to help" without expecting anything in return. In that sense, he'll always live on as a profound inspiration.

To the Tierney family,

My grandmother Mildred Nager was involved in politics with Mr Tierney back in the 60's and that's how I met his daughter Maura back in 1974 along with Pat. He was a blessed soul for he had love in ample amounts for whom he cared for. The Tierney's and Boston have lost one of their true heroes. MAY GOD truly bless you all. I was an intern for Joe from UMass,in the 70's, my job was to read the Hyde Park weekly papers and cut out the Students of the week and Joe would send them letters. He helped anyone who walked into the office,I watched and noticed that his staff didn't make a list of people who asked for help, I once said to Joe, you didn't take their information, he asked why and I said so you can call them later to help you campaign, he said we don't run that kind of office. He told me you help my campaign because you want to not because I'm going to do something for you. Small world my mother worked at the State House with his brother Jackie. My Family is sad to hear of his passing. He will be missed.

To the Tierney Family,

Joe and I were pals during our high school days at Boston English. South Boston and Charlestown - it couldn't get any better. Although Joe and I sort of lost touch with each other over the years, I closely followed his successful career from a distance. I was saddened to read of his passing. My prayers and sincere condolences are with all of you.

Joe was one of a kind I loved his stories especially the one about his first job carrying the disabled plumber on his back up five flights of stairs to do a job . At times he drove me crazy bringing a plastic mouse into my restaurant leaving it on the bar just for a reaction. Most of all I loved the way Joe and Pat were together, best friends soulmates . I will miss him .

Dear Pat and family,
"Sonny" cared about everyone without any consideration for what they could do for him. I knew him when I was an administrative assistant to the Boston School Committee and we worked together on busing and other problems that his constituents were having.
When the elected committee was abolished he called me and asked what I was going to do. I told him that i was going to have to retire and he told me about a special retirement provision of those who are discharged because of financiaL and political reasons.
Because of this I was ableto retire at 51 with an enhanced pension which allowed me to pursue a career with non-profit organiations that aided recent released offenders and the homeless. I really felt that Sonny did this because he knew this is what I would eventually do in honor of him.
