JOSEPH W. VALENTINE Obituary
VALENTINE, Joseph W. Of Santa Rosa, CA, formerly of Natick & Duxbury, MA, succumbed to cancer on May 27, 2016 after a valiant 9-month battle. Joe was born on April 7, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Rene Valentine and Theresa Walsh. He was raised by his mother and his step-father, Elmer Rathjen. He is survived by his wife, Eunice Valentine, of Santa Rosa, CA, and his six children, Kathleen Valentine of Springfield, MA, Joe (Sharon) Valentine Jr. of Franklin, MA, Jane Valentine of Springfield, MA, Michael (Debi) Valentine of Lincoln, NH, Debby (Bruce) Inpyn of Huntersville, NC and Mark (Becky) Valentine of Natick, MA. He is also survived by the mother of his six children, Lorraine (Bressor) Mazzariello, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters and a brother. He is also survived by many cousins and friends. Mr. Valentine's career in nonprofit organizations spanned more than six decades. He devoted 30 years to the United Way movement, as the chief professional officer of a number of organizations, including having served for 12 years as the President and Executive Director of the United Way of the Bay Area in San Francisco, CA. While living in Duxbury, MA he served as Executive Director at Boston Computer Society. Joe was a veteran of WWII having served with the Naval Air Corp. He is a 1950 graduate of Springfield College and a 1964 graduate of Boston College Graduate School of Social Work. Joe lived the last months of his life as he lived his long remarkable life - with verve, determination, a sense of humor, and a deep commitment to his family and friends. Joe will be greatly missed, and the mark he made on the many people he loved, mentored and befriended will live on. In lieu of flowers, Joe has requested that memorial gifts be made to the "Valentine Fund", Springfield College Development Office, 263 Alden Street, Springfield, MA 01109, or to Memorial Hospice, 439 College Ave., Santa Rosa, CA 95401
