When I worked at Massport, Lowell was always with me when it came to helping the community. He completely understood what they were going through and he was an expert at the delicate balance of running an airport and those impacted by it! He was great to work with and I miss him very much!

I am so saddened to hear of the sudden death of Lowell. I had the priviledge of knowing and working with him when I was a Boston City Councillor during my first term. I have admired and respected him during his many years in public service and most recently during his work at Massport. I will miss him, as will everyone who knew him.

Karen,
I thought it had to be a mistake when someone told me Friday that a "deputy mayor" had died. I said, no, no, Kevin was Mayor.
How sad and stunning to learn my friend was right.
I used to run into Lowell perhaps once a year at some civic event, and he was always so warm and charming. We had a great talk (mostly about the politics of fishing, which I cover for the Gloucester Times these days) at the Mayor's service. He told me he was worried about your health, and you had moved from the South End to Cambridge to be more comfortable. I said: "Cambridge?? Sacrilege!"
I have wondeful memories of you both 20 years ago in JP, personally (the adorable rubber stamp company) and professionally (covering City Hall with such remarkable sources as Lowell almost literally in my backyard, never mind the late dear Averil and David Mundel literally my house).
My heart so goes out to you.

Dear Karen, your extended family, and Lowell's many friends and colleagues,
I was shocked and saddened by Lowell's untimely passing. He had so much more to contribute.
To all the accolades, I want to add my praise for his personal qualities. He was truly a superior person--kind, thoughtful, caring, and interested in the larger world as well as people's individual worries and preoccupations. He had a great sense of humor and a zest for life. And he was the perfect husband for Karen, my friend since our Houghton Mifflin days.
I can't believe I'm writing all this in the past tense. I hope he knew how much we all admired him.
Much love,
Cynthia

Dear Karen,
I am heartsick at Lowell's untimely death. I have interacted with Lowell for over forty years and our relationship evolved over time into a mutually respectful friendship and shared values. It started in Kevin's administration when this young bright financial whiz kid was handling fiscal matters for Kevin and I was head of the developers council and we crossed swords. You learn a lot about someone when you have to argue differences in a political world and find real principled compromises, when you can have disagreements and not be disagreeable, and when you end up with mutual respect. Our discussions were significant in lifting impediments to many proposed developments without being a retreat for the Mayor.
Years later Lowell was a major supporter of the Harvard Kennedy School's Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston and Suffolk Law School's Rappaport Center for Public Service. We shared the desire to have the best and the brightest commit their talent to meeting the challenges of urban problems and finding the excitement in local and state government. He mentored our fellows with joy and left them enriched.
Over the last decade he became a friend and someone I respected enough to talk about a life after the Port Authority. At my age I know how productive those years could have been and how he was looking forward to it.
Of course our loss and the City's loss doesn't compare to yours and we can only offer our sympathy and remembrances. Lowell's life stands for what the Rappaport Institute and Rappaport Center try to inspire. He was an effective, respected and creative public servant devoted to Boston's governance and well being. He served with grace and shared his enjoyment in what he did.
My wife Phyllis came to know and deeply appreciate Lowell during these last years and shares my deep sympathy at his much too early death.
We just wanted you to know that we will miss your husband. We will try to find a way to recognize his contribution to our shared cause.
Sincerely
Jerry Rappaport
