MABEL CHIN Obituary
CHIN, Mabel On November 5, 2013, age 100. A resident of Bostons Chinatown for nearly 90 years, survived by brother Edward of Bishop, GA, sisters Dorothy Pon and Lillian of Holmes Beach, FL, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Three younger brothers, Neil, Albert and David predeceased her. Mabel was born in Toishan Province of Canton, China and came to the US at age 9, admitted after spending a month at the Angel Island Immigration Station in San Francisco Bay. She was educated in the Boston Public Schools. After graduating from Girls High School in 1935, she attended Burdett College. She was perhaps the first employee of Asian descent to work at a large downtown department store. She also worked as the bookkeeper for a major dressmaking company. However, real estate and its management became her main professional interests. Mabel was an active member of the Boston Chinatown/Tufts Medical/Dental Schools/ hospital community. Being bilingual, she was in great demand. The wide spectrum of problems brought to her included issues of immigration, affordable housing, legal affairs, home repairs, compliance with laws and regulations, and others. She served as interpreter and intermediary between immigrants and local, state, and federal agencies, banks, businesses, and health service providers, especially for the Tufts Medical Center. Motivated only by a keen sense of community responsibility, she sought neither recompense nor recognition. Her accomplishments notwithstanding, Mabel, throughout her life, was dedicated to her family. She was supportive, thoughtful, and generous, as she was with all who came to her for help. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Salvation Army or The Angel Island Immigration Station, 5 Third St., Suite 700, San Francisco, CA 94103. Visitation will be on Sunday, November 17, 2013 from 1:00 7:00 p.m. at Boston Harborside Home of J. S. Waterman-Waring-Langone, 580 Commercial St., BOSTON 02109, (617) 536-4110. Shuttle service will be available only on Sunday, leaving from the Chinese Evangelical Church, 249 Harrison Ave. Boston 02111. Services will be on Monday, November 18, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. noon. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
