DOHERTY, Madeleine M. (Collins) 97, died peacefully August 13, 2012 at her summer cottage on her beloved Drakes Island, Maine, surrounded by her family and caregivers. She was born in Dorchester to Frances (Campbell) and Patrick Joseph Collins and was predeceased by her sisters Eleanor, Frances Hodge and her brother David Collins. She lived in Newton, MA for 85 years, graduating from Newton High School in 1932 and from Radcliffe College in 1936. She worked for ten years for the New England Telephone and married Charles J. Doherty after a whirlwind sixteen year courtship. She was a loving mother to her two sons, Charles J. Doherty, Jr. and his companion Maryann Dwyer of Watertown, and Richard J. Doherty and his wife, Kristine, of Milton, and a beloved and fun-loving grandmother of Anna Doherty and Ben Eisenbraun of Somerville, Sarah Barrett and her husband, Jay Barrett, of Nashua, NH, and Peter Doherty of Jamaica Plain, Andrew Doherty of Boston and Matthew and Nora Doherty of Milton. She was active with St. Bernard's Parish, various book clubs, Newton Church Women United, the Roxbury Food Cupboard, Rosie's Place, Newton Christmas Service Committee and her Radcliffe Class activities. On Drakes Island, she was renowned for her intrepid daily swims, undaunted by the "invigorating" Maine ocean waters. She was the proud great grandmother to Miles and Ellis Eisenbraun of Somerville and Jonathan Barrett of Nashua, NH. She was also survived by Dorothy Doherty of Jamaica Plain and was cherished by many nieces and nephews, wonderful friends and neighbors and her devoted caregivers Myra, Patti, Sylvia and Joananne.
