MARIE L. "LAURIE" McGOWAN Obituary
McGOWAN, Marie L. "Laurie" Of Lowell, MA. peacefully passed away on October 28, 2016. She was the precious wife of Dr. Charles E. McGowan for 60 years. She was born in Newton, MA on March 7, 1934 the daughter of Dr. Laurence J. and Ella A. (Rushforth) Louis. A designated "Mother" was Loretta Putnam of Georgia who came to help the Louis family when Laurie was six months old. She was a boarding alumna of Notre Dame Academy, Tyngsborough MA and commuter at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. With that solid traditional training and a unique talent, she taught her family fundamentals, dressed them in practical attractive attire, and enhanced her homes with good design and delightful décor. Utilizing the 1920s Boston School of Cooking as her culinary bible, along with Loretta's recipes, healthy and tasteful meals were served. She was a worker in every sense of the word. Her watercolors adorn many walls and her crafted silver and gold jewelry compliment many bodies. Her collections of handstitched Canadian quilts and Austrian Geiger clothing are heirlooms. Since 1979 in homes from West Falmouth to Woods Hole with the past twenty three years of permanent residence after retirement, they were members of the Quissett Yacht Club and the Quissett Harbor House Land Trust. Laurie loved the Scituate, Quissett, and Maine seashores. Charlie and Laurie frequently traveled to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and memorably to Italy, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, and Scotland. The French West Indies Island of St. Barths became a favorite destination as did Atlantic Canada's province of New Brunswick where family and sporting camp friends welcomed her for many years.Survivors, beside husband Charlie, are Laurie A. (David) Dionne and children Lindsey, Cassandra, Andrew, and Patrick of Texas, Charles E. Jr. (Joanna) and sons Charles III and Matthew of Scituate, Jean M. (James) Burbine and daughters Jacqueline and Kelley of Westford, Margaret A. (John) Mahan and children Sarah, Jack, Kelan, and Maggie of Andover, Laurence J. (Nancy) McGowan and Larry Jr. Lauren, and Nicole of Virginia, Mary A. (Matthew) Mulkern and daughters Shannon and Meaghan of Westford, Elizabeth (Leonard) Jolles of Framingham and children Kate and Paul Throckmorton of Denver, Christine E. (Paul) Donahue and children Edward, Ella, and Kiera of Winchester, Paula Kondos and daughters Lily and Ruby of York Maine, and Katherine E. (Hilary) Davis and children Meredith, Colby, and Charlotte of Falmouth. Six great grandchildren complete the clan.Laurie's personality beautified her being, leaving character, faith, and fortitude as examples. She held family and friends close to her heart, and all return the affection. Visitation will be held on THURSDAY from 3 until 8 PM at Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen Street, CHELMSFORD.
