1923 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
POSTLETHWAITE, Mary Anneliese (Machlup) Artist and Ardent Democrat Of Washington, DC, formerly of Cambridge, Massachusetts, died on November 19, 2016. She was the beloved wife of the late Alan Postlethwaite. Born on December 31, 1923, in Vienna, Austria, Mary spent her preteen years in the home of Timothy Eden in Fritham, England, before moving to the States in 1939. An accomplished ceramist and weaver, she studied at Massachusetts School of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School, and Cranbrook Academy of Art. She went on to teach art at House in the Pines in Norton, MA; Hathaway Brown School for Girls in Shaker Heights, OH; and in Boston at Simmons College, Boston University, and Garland Junior College. Her work was exhibited at MoCA in NYC and galleries in Cambridge, MA, and Washington, DC. A passionate Democrat, Mary campaigned for Adlai Stevenson, Massachusetts Governor Endicott "Chubb" Peabody, and President John F. Kennedy. She served as Director of the Cambridge Civic Association and supported liberal candidates as a volunteer in Cambridge's Precinct 9. After moving to Washington DC, she volunteered at the Democratic National Committee and at the Clinton White House for First Lady Hillary Clinton. Most important to Mary was her family, including her parents, Olly and Gus Machlup (deceased) who started Cardiosonics, the original manufacturer of the Littman stethoscope. She was devoted to her husband, Alan, who she married in 1950 in Belmont, MA, and with whom she raised three daughters, Wendy Postlethwaite, Burlington, MA; Andrea Riedy, McLean, VA, and Kim Draper, Hull, MA, who dearly miss her. She brought joy to the lives of all who survive her, including her daughters, her sons-in-law Kevin Sullivan, Mark Riedy, and David Munro and her grandchildren: Whitney Kate and Rhyan Sullivan and their sister Amanda (Sullivan) Landrum; Copeland and Abigail Draper, and Alexander and Julia Riedy; as well as her great-grandson McCoy Landrum. Private Memorial.
