WILES, Mary E. (Downey) May 16 1928 – June 4, 2018 Mary Elizabeth (Downey) Wiles passed peacefully on June 4, 2018 in Timonium, Maryland. She had just celebrated her ninetieth birthday. Mary was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and grew up in Somerville. An avid reader, she received a degree from Regis College in English literature. Later she was awarded a master's degree in education from Northeastern University and then taught English and remedial reading in the Somerville City Schools for many years. She often commented that it brought her great joy to teach a non-reader how to read. Her commitment to education was underscored by the fact that all her children were college graduates. She married William Wiles in 1955 and moved to Lexington where she raised her family. Her husband, Bill, passed in January 2014. She is survived by her children; Eileen (Kenneth) Sateriale of Methuen, MA, William Wiles, Jr. of Lowell, MA, Edward Wiles of Reno, Nevada, Margot (Philip) Ziperman of Burtonsville, Maryland and Charles Wiles of Reno, Nevada as well as her grandchildren; Maura Sateriale of Brooklyn, NY, Carla (Harry) Sateriale Hopkinson of London, UK and Henry Ziperman of Burtonsville, MD. Her nuclear family, consisting of her parents, Dr. Edward and Anna Mae Downey, two sisters, Eleanor Gagan and Anne Tierney, and a brother, Edward Downey Jr, all preceded her in death. The Wiles family greatly appreciates the dedicated care that the staff of Dublin Court at Mercy Ridge Retirement Community gave their mother for her final years. The funeral mass will be held in St. Brigid's Church, 2001 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA starting at 10AM on June 23, 2018. Interment will be in Westview Cemetery in Lexington. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the National or Reading is Fundamental.
