1930 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
FLANAGAN, Mary Ellen (Gill) Passed away peacefully on September 20th at her home in San Diego surrounded by her family. Mary was born to the late Joseph A. Gill and Mary A. (Nelson) Gill in Boston on December 30, 1930. She is survived by her devoted and loving spouse of 65 years Ret. Cdr. Patrick Francis Flanagan, Sr. Mary and Pat met and grew up in the Charlestown area of Boston. Pat was first attracted to Mary's bravery and sense of adventure when he saw her jump off the Toin Bridge into the Charles River. Mary drew on that bravery and adventerous spirit, as young Naval wife, when she relocated 14 times. Each of Mary's eight children were born in a different harbor town. Mary even gave birth to a child in Morocco and traveled back to the U.S. by ship with three children under five years old, before settling the ever expanding Flanagan Nation in Pacific Beach in 1968. Mary's family was her passion. With unsurpassed selflessness, calmness and humor she provided endless love and support to her eight children, 16 grandchildren and first great grandchild (born days before her passing). No family members' birthday ever passed without a handwritten card from "Mimi". If she knew someone had a special occasion, Mimi always discovered a thoughtful gift that made her loved ones experiences better. She was grateful for all she had and supported many charitable causes. Especially, The Epilepsy Foundation as they support programs and research for the condition with which her late and beloved son Patrick Francis Flanagan, Jr. suffered. Mary is survived by siblings Joanne O'Rourke, Joseph Gill (Mary), and Nancy Kearney (Mike). Her children Michael Flanagan (Nancy), Brian Flanagan, Mary Lentz (Ron), Ellen Carrillo, Chrissy Smith (Chris), Nancy Blumenfeld (Adam) and Jane Flanagan- Brown (Jerry). Her grandchildren Michael Flanagan II, Katie Lentz, Jamie Carrillo, Kelly Charles (Alex), Meagan Smith, Kenzie Carrillo, Cassidy Lentz, Shannon Smith, Sean Blumenfeld, Kerry Smith, Mia Carrillo, Carlie Lentz, Allison Blumenfeld, Michaela Brown, Daniel Carrillo, Gillian Brown and, great grandchild, Oliver Patrick Charles. A viewing was held at Pacific Beach Mortuary on Friday, September 23rd. The funeral took place on Saturday, September 24th at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Pacific Beach. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catholic Charities or The Epilepsy Foundation.
