MICHAEL FREDERICK AUSTIN Sr. Obituary
AUSTIN, Michael Frederick Sr Age 77, of Brewster, MA, formerly a long-time resident of North Andover, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2016, surrounded by his wife Nancy and their children, after a decades-long battle with cancer. Mike was born on March 27, 1939 in Methuen, MA to the late Walter and Margaret (Child) Austin. He was raised in Lawrence, MA, and attended Central Catholic High School and Merrimack College. Mike met Nancy at a high school dance in 1957, and they spent the next 60 years together, raising their four children in North Andover. Mike spent 37 years with Liberty Mutual in Boston in the Life and Financial Services division, retiring as an Assistant Vice President in Personal Sales. Mike was active in the North Andover Booster Club, coaching Little League baseball teams for many years. He was also active in the parish of St. Michael's Church, and shared his love of Ireland and singing by performing for years in the "Irish Show" fundraisers. In his retirement years, Mike and Nancy settled in Brewster, MA, where Mike joined Captain's Golf Course and met many of the friends who supported and bolstered him during his recent health battles. His greatest joy was spending time with his cherished grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Nancy (Potter) Austin, and his daughter, Cathy McElhiney, of North Andover, his son, Mark and wife Elen Austin, of Manhattan, and his daughter, Kerry and husband Todd Stauss, of Georgetown, MA. He was predeceased by his son, Michael. "Pop" will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Johnny, Danny and Kevin McElhiney, Avery and Sadie Austin, and Matthew and Abby Stauss. Mike's family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the teams at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Pleasant Bay Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Family and friends are invited to visit with the family at Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third St., NORTH ANDOVER, on Monday, August 8 from 4pm to 8pm, and to attend a Funeral Mass to celebrate Mike's life at St. Michael's Church, 196 Main St. North Andover, MA 01845, on Tuesday, August 9 at 11:30am. Burial to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: The Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA, 02445-7295.
