I just recently heard of Michael Bare's passing. I moved to Los Angeles almost 5 years ago, but before I moved I was working at Boston Neighborhood Network and directing his show, "Citizen's Corner" for South Boston. He was a wonderful man, did a lot of things for the community, and will be greatly missed.

Dear Pauline and the rest of Michael's family: Please accept my condolences for your loss. I knew Michael through his work in the South Boston community, and there is nobody I admired more. He was unmatched in his devotion to the community, his passion for history, his ability to mobilize people, organizations and resources, and his generous and humble spirit. Much like one of his heroes, Henry Knox, Michael was an unassuming person who answered the call when it came, demonstrating incredible ability and acumen, a capacity for leadership, and a bottomless dedication to his community. He never seemed to want to draw attention to himself and was generous and inclusive in his praise and assistance to others. When I was a relative newcomer to South Boston, Michael was one of the first people to provide encouragement and recognition of my efforts to get involved with the Dorchester Heights Association & other neighborhood organizations. He praised every small accomplishment we achieved, invited me on his TV show, appointed me to committees, & introduced me to others that were trying to do the same thing. None of us could compare with him but he was a mentor and role model for all of us. His tenure as President of the South Boston Citizens Association set the gold standard for citizenship and community activism. He masterminded, organized and directed seemingly hundreds of events celebrating the life and history of our community. He led the effort to recover and restore the markers along the 300-mile route taken by those soldiers in the winter of 1776. For the past several years he has been quietly building bridges between South Boston and Roxbury, commemorating the final stage of Gen. Knox's journey from Fort Hill to the Heights. He has made this one of the annual events of the St. Patrick's Day season, bringing together interested citizens and neighborhood groups from both communities, busing us back and forth along the trail, reviving interest in the many historical sites along the way. The foregoing is just a very short list of some of his accomplishments. It was a privilege to know him, and I feel that his departure leaves a hole in the soul of South Boston. It best may be filled by trying to follow the example he set. I know you will miss him terribly, but I hope you will find some comfort in knowing how much he was admired and respected by so many others. Sincerely, Peter Golemme

Dear Bare Family,

Boston and her citizens lost two giant men on the same day last week with the passing of Ray Tye and Michael Bare. I don't know if they ever met or even knew of one another but here were two men of different generations and backgrounds who shared the same world view. Mr. Tye, a Jewish-American, and Mr. Bare, an Irish-American, were humanitarians of the first order. Their philanthropy of spirit and selflessness touched everyone who was fortunate enough to know them. Perhaps their strongest legacy is reflected in the faces of the many who did not have any idea who they were but whose lives were made better because Ray and Mike cared so much for their community and neighbors. Both bridged racial and cultural divides through the goodness in their hearts. The greatest tribute we can pay to these wonderful men is for each of us reach out to people in need and tell them "I am going to help you."

Yours truly,

David Green

There are many people in South Boston that don't know Michael and don't realize just how much he affected their lives. May you rest in peace and love with the lord.

Pauline and family, I know I speak for all of the National Park Service staff who worked with Michael on so many of his dreams that became realities to promote the history of Boston, and specifically educating all to the significance of Evacuation Day. His tireless and unselfish efforts to bring communities together as one to celebrate their shared heritage will never be forgotten. He will always always be remembered by us, who he touched, as a true patriot and inspiration.

March 12, 2010

I remember Michael's first Cable TV appearance on my City of Boston Veterans'Department show. He was wonderful and passionate in talking about Evacuation Day and dragging the cannons from New York, etc. I loved helping him get his own show together which he developed over the years to one that we all looked forward to watching. We'll miss your face on TV. We'll miss you on March 17th. We'll miss you always. Thank you for being such a great friend of the "town you loved so well". God Bless...
