GUILD, Rev. Polly Laughland Of Weston MA, died peacefully at home on November 7, 2009, at age 85. Surviving Polly are 2 sisters Harriet Cowdery and Margo Callard, 7 children Lorna, Linda, and Andrew Laughland; Todd, Sylvia, Katherine and Lina Guild, and 13 grandchildren. Polly was one of the first women ordained as a Unitarian-Universalist minister. She served the West Newton and Wellesley UU churches before coming to Follen Church, Lexington, where she served for 16 years. She retired in 1992, but remained active in spreading religious freedom and connecting Unitarian-Universalists around the world. Her many contributions include the establishment of the Ted Guild Village Bank, a micro-lending organization in the Philippines; the joint endowment with her late husband Ted Guild of a Unitarian school in the Khasi Hills of India; and promoting religious freedom and peace by founding the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists (ICUU) and being active in the International Association for Religious Freedom (IARF). She touched lives of many and many touched hers. A celebration of Polly's life will take place at Follen Church on Wednesday, November 11 at 2pm, followed by a reception at the church.
