RALPH G. HIRSCHOWITZ Obituary
HIRSCHOWITZ, Ralph G. Of Brookline, age 92, died August 29, 2016. Born in Vrede, South Africa, he grew up in Durban, where he excelled in academics and won a scholarship to the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School. Freshly out of medical school in 1948, he volunteered as a medical officer in the Israeli War of Independence. On his return to Johannesburg, he practiced general medicine until emigrating to the United States in 1961, where he specialized in psychiatry. His psychiatric career began at Fergus Falls State Hospital, Minnesota, where he became passionately committed to the new movement of deinstitutionalization, helping to establish community mental health centers in rural areas. After a year at Butler Hospital in Providence, he was appointed as Associate Professor at the Laboratory of Community Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and then served as Director of the Office of Prevention in the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. His career encompassed practice, research, and teaching in preventive medicine, psychiatry and the management sciences. Later in his career, he was recruited by The Levinson Institute to create and implement leadership training programs, including executive coaching, organizational development and team-building. He was on the forefront of the practice of providing one-on-one coaching to top management professionals at major United States corporations and government agencies. He was an avid and adventurous world traveler, with a fascination for different cultures. He delighted in trying new foods and sharing his discoveries with his family. He was a man of many gifts, witty, playful, charming, and compassionate. He leaves behind Rhona, his loving wife of 57 years, his beloved children, Vivien Marcow Speiser and her husband Phillip, Simone Nathan and her husband Leon, William Hirschowitz and his wife Mary Ellen, and Neil Hirschowitz, as well as grandchildren, Yair Marcow, Jennifer Klein and her husband Michael, and Andrew Bloom and his wife Sarah, and great-grandchildren, Hailey, James and Ava Klein and Emma Bloom. He is survived by his sister, Rica Ehrlich and her husband Robert, and many nieces and nephews. Services in Levine Chapel, 470 Harvard Street, BROOKLINE, will be held on Tuesday, August 30th at 11:30 a.m. Burial is private.
