RAYMOND JOSEPH DEMEO Obituary
DEMEO, Raymond Joseph 93, of Newton and Mashpee, MA, died on July 11, 2016. Beloved husband and father of 7 children and 18 grandchildren, Ray was born December 2, 1922 in Waltham, MA. He was the second of seven children to Louis and Anna Demeo. Ray Demeo was a man of exceptional optimism and confidence. He was magnetic, always engaging and genuinely cared about people. He loved conversation, debate and good humor. Ray's life centered on his family and his faith. In his youth, Ray was a good student and athlete at St. Charles School. He played all sports and excelled at baseball, hockey and golf. He came of age during and was shaped by the Great Depression. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army, where he took up boxing. He landed at Normandy D+5 and saw the liberation of Paris. After the war, he finished college at UMass Amherst with a BA in Economics. He married his love Susan Harmsworth in Brookline in 1962. Over the next ten years they had seven children. Ray was also a scratch golfer and ran the West Newton Golf League from his restaurant, which he co-owned and operated with his brother Michael Demeo. He was known and loved by many people in the Newton area, where, in retirement, he worked in residential real estate. In his later years, Ray loved to be with his grandchildren, to hit golf balls and to be with his wife Susan, who cared for him every day. Ray is predeceased by his brother Louis and his sister Anne, S.J. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Susan Harmsworth Demeo, his sisters Virginia and Theresa and his brothers Eddie and Michael. He is survived by his children and their spouses: Raymond and his wife Flor, Catherine and her husband Chris Walton, Joseph and his wife Patty, Maria and her husband John Dunn, Susan and her husband Dan Leary, Dan and his wife Suzanne and Anna and her husband Siegmar Escholz. He is survived by his grandchildren: Giovanna, Isabella, Gabriella, Emily, Sam, Remsen, Summer, Jack, Abigail, Michael, Kaela, Hannah, Luke, Jacob, Zachary, Dylan, Axel and Jane. There will be a wake at Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral home at 475 Main St., FALMOUTH, MA on Thursday, July 14 from 4-7pm. A Funeral Mass at St. Anthony's Church, 167 East Falmouth Hwy (Route 28), East Falmouth, on Friday, Julu 15 at 12:00 noon, with burial services at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
