Richard McGlinchey Obituary

McGLINCHEY, Richard "Dick" Accomplished marketing professional with a career spanning three decades, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Lexington on Wednesday night. In addition to recent heart disease, he had been battling a progressive neurological disease, Multiple System Atrophy, for the past four years. McGlinchey worked with many of the area's top technology companies and founded three Boston-area marketing and public relations firms, where he applied his intuitive understanding of marketing strategy to help client companies across a variety of sectors. Throughout his career and personal life, Mr. McGlinchey displayed a zest for life and an ability to perceive and connect with the essence of every person he met. His generosity of spirit touched many lives. After undergraduate and graduate study in psychology at Gannon College and Kent University, Mr. McGlinchey began his career as Director of Counseling at Lawrence General and then Boston City Hospitals. A Master's degree in Communication at Boston University was followed by a stint as reporter for the Holyoke Transcript. Finally, he brought his formidable people and writing skills to the business world. Mr. McGlinchey's knack for translating complex early technology products into understandable terms catapulted his career from small agencies to the position of Marketing Director at McCormack and Dodge. He subsequently founded McGlinchey & Paul; Meridian Technology Marketing; and Bluepoint Venture Marketing - as well as Europlus, a consortium of European marketing firms. From 1999 to 2004, McGlinchey was a Venture Partner at Battery Ventures, where he directed marketing and strategic initiatives for the firm's $1.8 billion portfolio of early-stage technology companies. Most recently, he served as business advisor and Board member of Isis Biopolymer, a medical device company developing a revolutionary non-invasive drug delivery system. McGlinchey was well-known in Boston-area technology circles for his dry wit and his penchant for auto racing and ice hockey. He treasured time spent on the ice with a group of old friends, and racing - and winning - at Limerock Park and other venues with the Vintage Sportscar Car Club of America. As his children grew, Mr. McGlinchey's free time centered on them _ coaching youth hockey and serving on the Board of the Boston Youth Symphony, among other activities. All who knew him knew his love for Prince Edward Island, Canada, where he shared a second home in West Covehead with his beloved family and two pet Corgis. Mr. McGlinchey is survived by his wife of 26 years, Sara; daughter, Elizabeth, of Montreal; and son, Andrew, of Lexington - as well as a brother, James, in Virginia; a sister, Mary, in Pennsylvania; and a sister, Barbara, in Maine; and their families. A service will be held later this month in Prince Edward Island, with a Boston area memorial service being planned for the spring. Donations may be made in Dick's honor to the National Ataxia Foundation (www.ataxia.org); the Northeast Animal Shelter (northeastanimalshelter.org); or the Friends of Covehead and Brackley Bays stanhopecovehead.pe.ca/friends).

I knew Dick when I worked at McCormack & Dodge. It was a long time ago, but I remember Dick as a friend who had a great sense of humor and a big heart. He was someone you always felt good being around.

I got to know Dick when I was writing about software companies and he was at McCormack & Dodge. He was kind, funny, disarmingly honest, and a natural-born mentor. I only knew him briefly, but I can imagine the impact he had on those who were lucky enough to know him better.

Dick invited Tim Buckley and I to play hockey at Belmont Hill over 20 years ago, and we have played ever since, He has been missed sorely the past few years, both his locker room humour, and strong hockey playmanship. God Bless Him and his Family.

I looked forward to seeing Dick every summer and catching up on his past years experiences. Although I knew Dick for only 8 or 9 years, I felt like I have known him a lifetime. He was a kind and gentle soul, who always had time, for everyone. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He made quite an impression on many people here on PEI. God Rest His Soul!!

To the McGlinchey family
you have our deepest condolences on your loss.

My Dad & I met Dick up at PEI for one of the car shows up there. In the years that followed we'd run into him at many other car shows in Boston and PEI, and it was always a blast to chat with him. We'll miss him.

Sara
My heart goes out to you, Lizzy, Andy, and all of the many people Dick touched with his generosity, humor, intelligence, and honesty. I hardly remember anyone able to make me laugh as hard as he could, or offer a provocative viewpoint as good-naturedly if bluntly. Dick was an original - so keen of perception and wit, yet positive and open to all kinds of people. The too-brief times we spent together - at the rink, in the center of town, at parties - I remember marvelling at his easy, funny way with the kids and sensing how much he was loved and admired. I wish now that I'd taken him up on his invitation to don the pads again - to be on his team was fortunate indeed. Love to you all!

Dear Sara, Lizzie, and Andy,

Since my children are the same ages as Lizzie and Andy, we had a lot of casual contact through church activities through the years. Dick always seemed to have a sense of practicality and good humor in whatever was happening, and shared his business acumen freely with the Follen Church community. He'll be missed there, certainly.

My heart goes out to you all as you struggle through the changes this will bring.

Our world has lost a beautiful spirit.
We always appreciated Dick's friendship and support for us and for British Car Days PEI. Even with the duress of his illness, he was always able to bring smiles to those he touched. May your memories of him be a comfort to you as they will be to us.

Dick wore sweater vests - and he reveled in doing so, despite my constant ribbing!

Dick had such a great mind, razor-sharp wit and always, always a smile. He was selfless with his time for friends and loved his family above all. I consider myself very fortunate to have been counted among his many friends. I will miss Dick's company - as so many will.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
