SINGER, Rev. Dr. Robert B.L. Jr. Age 85, died peacefully in his home with his two daughters by his side on Friday, November 25, 2016. Mr. Singer was born in Philadelphia on July 17, 1931, and son of the late Robert B. L. Singer and Marian T. Singer. He was a 1st Lieutenant and Battery Commander of the Korean War period, and a member of The American Legion.|
Mr. Singer was the husband of the late Rev. Dr. Barbara H. Singer. He served as clergyman in Newtown, Easton, Avon and Middle Haddam, CT Congregational churches, as well as Hingham and Marion, MA. In Hingham, he helped create the new Shalom curriculum for Sunday School which gained national attention, denominational recognition and publication. He graduated from Harvard University in 1958, Yale Divinity School in 1961, and received a Doctorate of Ministry degree in Pastoral Psychology at the Andover Newton Theological School in 1982. Mr. Singer was a member of the United Church of Christ Massachusetts Conference, Interchurch Council of Greater New Bedford, and the Housing for Elderly Committee in Marion. He was Police Chaplain and a member of the Youth Services Board in East Hampton, CT. After retiring, Mr. Singer became an Honorary Minister at the Falmouth, MA Congregational Church, assistant chaplain at Falmouth Hospital, and interim pastor of various local churches.
Mr. Singer was an avid hiker in the White Mountains, canoed with church families on the Saco River in Maine, taught woodcraft, and camping. He skied and skated with youth groups in VT. With his first wife, Mariam E. Singer, and two daughters, he enjoyed fishing and canoeing family vacations on Lake Winnipesaukee. His hallmark was a good joke, especially during a sermon, which would bring hearty laughter. "Bob" loved jazz and classical music, astronomy, and a homemade chocolate birthday cake.
He is survived by his two daughters, Mariam Elizabeth Singer Mroz of Fairhaven MA and Deborah L. Singer Brewer of Hanover, MA; a sister, Marian H. Prescott of Exeter, NH, one sister-in-law, Barbara Singer of Avon, Ct., two step-sons, John F. Goddard of Orlando, FL, Stephen H. Goddard of Halifax, MA and a step-daughter, Carol G. Cameron of Mattapoisett, MA, plus 10 wonderful grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on December 5, 2016 at the Falmouth Congregational Church located at 68 Main Street, Falmouth MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Church World Service, P.O. Box 968, Elkhart, IN 46515. A burial service will immediately follow the church service, at Agawam Annex Cemetery, located at the end of Stillman Memorial Drive in Wareham, MA. Afterwards, everyone is invited to attend a reception at Lindsay's Family Restaurant located at 3138 Cranberry Highway in Wareham to share memories and celebrate Bob's life.
