Obituary Condolences

KANE, Robert L. Sr. 61, of Ogunquit, ME died Saturday, July 9, at home. Married to Carol (Marotta) Kane for 31 years. Bob was born in Lynn, MA, educated at St. Dom Savio Prep and received a degree in microbiology from UMass, Amherst where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Later he earned his MBA from the University of Manchester, England where he, Carol and their children happily made their home for eight years. Bob's inquisitive mind, intellect, and can-do attitude shaped a successful international career in medical technology and business development. He even formed his own medical imaging and light source company used in the early breakthrough stages of laparoscopic surgery. His work in London as healthcare practice leader with Arthur D. Little led him to create Oxford Management Consulting, allowing expansion of his work with the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development in Western Europe, Japan, Ukraine, Russia and Mongolia. During this time, Bob was elected to the Royal Society of Medicine, London based on his extensive work in healthcare. He was a self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit that rarely rested. His mind was always engaged, interested and excited by new opportunities; whether its focus was building and owning a car wash or introducing cutting edge technology for laparoscopic gall bladder surgery. Yet even in the midst of his endless business ventures, Bob's devotion to his family was clear. Not only did he impart the importance of education, but he was quick to share his passion for travel with his children, particularly during their time in England. His family favorites?the Royal Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle, hiking Germany's Black Forest, swimming in the Indian Ocean off South Africa's Coast, touring the island of Cyprus - and visiting his father's birthplace in Ireland. After returning to the U.S. in 2005, he continued to travel back to the UK and Europe on business, yet was always happy to come home to Ogunquit, where long walks on Ogunquit Beach remained a prized pastime and very few days were ever too cold for a swim. Be it business or pleasure, it was always clear sailing and blue skies in Bob Kane's eyes?he will be missed. One of four children born to Leo Kane, Sr. (deceased) and Theresa (Hyde) Kane of Nahant, MA, Bob will be forever remembered by his beloved wife Carol, his treasured children Caroline Kane of Devon, England, Kristen Kane of New York City, and son Robert Kane, Jr. of Ogunquit, ME; and his sisters Susan (John) Carli of South Carolina, Elizabeth Kane of Boston and brother Leo Kane and children-Rosie and Ollie all of Cork, Ireland. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 20 at Sacred Heart Church, 446 Mountain Road (Route 168), Suffield, CT. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Living Well With Cancer Fund, York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, Maine 03909. Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME.
