ROBERT P. O'BRIEN Obituary
O'BRIEN, Robert P. "OB" Of Dennis died unexpectedly on October 20, 2016 at age 72, in the company of his loving wife 0f 44 years Gerri (Keraga) O'Brien and close family members. Born in 1944 in Boston, MA, OB graduated from college in 1966. He then joined the Marines and spent two years as a Combat Engineer in Vietnam, followed by two years as a Marine Security Guard at the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. There he met his future wife Gerri, who was also serving with the US Government in Malaysia. After their marriage in 1972, OB joined the Department of State as a Foreign Service Diplomatic Security Officer. He and Gerri were posted to Vientiane, Laos during a time which coincided with the end of the Vietnam war. Following his work there, he and Gerri were posted to Beirut, Lebanon, where they served during tumultuous and dangerous times when OB was faced with negotiating with terrorists for the security of our embassy there. Their next tour was Manila in the Philippines. Returning to Washington, DC, OB spent several years in successive senior State Department positions, including Director of the Training Center for Diplomatic Security Officers, and a stint at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He also served as head of protective details for Secretaries of State Edmund Muskie, Alexander Haig, and George P. Shultz. His next overseas tour was head of security at the US Embassy in Cairo, Egypt. While OB was serving in Cairo, Egypt as the head of security there, he and Gerri purchased their current home in East Dennis on Cape Cod. OB's last overseas posting was to London. Prior to his retirement in 2000, OB was the Director of Overseas Operations for the State Department, responsible for security at all of our missions overseas. After his retirement, OB supported Gerri by following her to Foreign Service appointments in London, Ankara, Turkey, and New Delhi, India. Following Gerri's retirement in 2011, OB and Gerri returned to East Dennis to enjoy the natural and relaxing surroundings of Cape Cod. Here OB spent many happy hours with his family members on the Cape, in Boston, and on Prince Edward Island, Canada. He leaves behind his loving wife Gerri, his sister Jean Scannell, and his many nephews and nieces in Massachusetts and other parts of the United States. He was a good and true friend to his neighbors in East Dennis, who enjoyed his company at coffee outings and local gatherings. His stories of past experiences enlivened many of those gatherings. Relatives and friends are invited to attend OB's wake on Wednesday October 26th from 4-8PM at the Morris, O'Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Drive, SOUTH YARMOUTH, MA, and his Funeral Mass on Thursday October 27th at 10AM at Christ the King Church, 3 Job's Fishing Rd., Mashpee, MA, followed by interment at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
