ROBERT T. (BOB) THORNTON Obituary
THORNTON, Robert T. (Bob) On July 8, 2016 Avow Hospice – Naples, FL, Bob lost his courageous fight with ALZ. He was 66. Bob was born in Boston, MA to Geneva (Wallace) and Robert T. Thornton and raised in Canton, MA. He worked 30 years for General Motors, starting as an electrician and working his way up to engineer in welding, robotics and plant changeovers. Bob was most proud of the research and work he did on the electric car, along with the four patents awarded to him by GM. Before starting with GM, Bob was a master electrician and worked for American Can Company and MassPort. Bob loved working with his hands, and after leaving GM, he developed and built The Radio Station Condos (16 units) on the banks of the Saco River in Conway, NH. After completing this project, Bob and his wife moved full time to Naples, FL where he enjoyed golfing, walking the beach, and watching the sunsets. Bob leaves behind his loving wife of 17 years, Jill Roeting, his mother Geneva (Wallace)Thornton, his three beautiful children, Kathi Lyon, Kristen (Michael) Cabral and David Thornton, his siblings – Diane (Warren) Jurovaty, Paul (Dorothy), Jane (Richard) McNulty, Christine (Randy Broekel) Endicott and Gary (Debbie). He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Sage and Clare Lyon, and Elena and Michael Cabral Jr. – whom he adored. Bob also leaves his mother-in-law Marcie (Smith/Roeting) (Anthony) Sansone, father-in-law John Donnelly, brothers and sisters-in law William (Diane) Roeting, Nancy (George) Ludwig, David (Nancy) Roeting, Mary (Tom) Hughes, John (Mary) Donnelly, Bob (Michelle) Donnelly, Joanne (Bill) Parkinson, Stephen (Venetia) Donnelly and Paul (Diane) Donnelly and many nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased in life by his first wife Jeanne (Donnelly), his mother-in-law Loretta (Giblin) Donnelly, his father-in-law William J. Roeting, and his father Robert T. Thornton, Sr. Services will be held September 17th, at 11:00am at St. Catherine's of Siena in Norwood, MA with a celebration of his life to follow at the Old Colonial Café, also in Norwood. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Avow Hospice (1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105) in Bob's memory. Avow allowed Bob to transition with dignity, love and caring. Also to The Alzheimer's Support Network (660 Tamiami Trail N., Ste. 21, Naples, FL 34102) where we learned how to navigate the disease that took his life. As his last act, Bob graciously donated his brain tissue to ALZ research in hopes that one day there will be a "cure" for this awful disease. It is definitely the "Long Goodbye" Bob will be missed for his humor, quick smile, and unconditional love. We all loved him to the moon and back.
