HUGO, Robert William Passed away unexpectedly July 27th, at home in Newburyport, MA his recent residence. He was 72. Previous to this he lived in Marblehead for over 50 years where he started his lifelong career as an independent bookseller and businessman. Bob founded The Spirit of '76 Bookstore in 1965, bought The Book Rack in Newburyport, and The Andover Bookstore, founded in 1809, the second oldest continually running bookstore in The U.S. He co-founded The Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Martha's Vinyard with his brother David and co-founded bookstores in Exeter and Portsmouth, NH among others. In 2003 Bob's son joined him at HugoBooks, creating a remarkable father-son team. He will take the helm of Bob's business continuing his father's legacy. A new bookstore is soon to open in Beverly, MA. He was born on August 17,1943, raised in Wakefield, MA, the son of Geraldine Duncan Hugo and Charles Thomas Hugo who predeceased him. He was one of eight children. Predeceased by his brother David, he leaves his brothers, Richard, Frederic, Joseph, and John Henry and his sisters, Jane and Dorothy. He was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, class of 1965. Bob's great love for his wife Kathe and their lifelong marriage was the cornerstone of his life. Their two children, John Madden and Katherine Alice, were his pride and joy. They adore and admire him. John's wife, Catalina Cuervo was very fond of her father-in-law. Bob's most recent delight was with his grandchildren, Rory and Isabella, introducing them to the world of books. He was a caring brother-in-law and uncle to his large family. He mentored so many in his day-to-day life in the communities he served and innumerable employees who dearly appreciated him. He will be remembered by all as a unique man who loved the challenge of business but most of all loved his family. A memorial will take place at the Corinthian Yacht Club, September 9th, at 11:00 AM.
