ROBERT ZILDJIAN Obituary

ZILDJIAN, Robert "Bob" 89, of Brunswick, Maine, passed away March 28th, 2013 at his home in Brunswick, Maine. Bob was born to the late Avedis Zildjian and Alice (Sally) Francis Zildjian (nee Goodale), July 14, 1923, in Boston, MA. He graduated from Dartmouth College class of 1945, and married Margaret Williamina (Willi) McTavish in 1951. They had three children, Wilson, Sally and Andy. Bob worked for his father at the Avedis Zildjian Company until his father's death in 1979. Passionate about cymbal making his entire life, Bob was an unstoppable force at the company, working in accounting, advertising, artist relations, production, research and development and sales. With Willi at his side, he travelled the world over many times, making fast friends and important allies in business. Bob also enlisted in the US Army and served as an infantryman during World War II. Coming home from the battlefield, he took time off to heal and joined a neighbour's hunting party on a trip to New Brunswick. It was there he first set eyes on Meductic, where he would eventually make history by building his beloved SABIAN cymbal factory. Through sheer dedication, perseverance and hard work, Bob would build two cymbal empires in his lifetime, a remarkable achievement. Bob is survived by his wife Willi and three children: Wilson, Sally and Andy. He also is survived by eight grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Salvation Army. A viewing will be held at Scott Funeral Home in Woodstock, New Brunswick on April 5th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral service will be held at the St. James United Church of Canada, in Woodstock, New Brunswick on April 6th at 4pm.

Willie.....You and Bob have been on my mind lately and when we left Maine, I knew he was not well. I goggled him only to find he had pasted in March. I was so sorry to find this out. You two were some of my favorite people in the practice. I always loved Bob's banter, so enjoyed seeing you both grace our doorway. My best to you and your family.

Willi, I'm so sad to read of Bob's passing. He was a wonderful man. You and Bob were two of my favorites, when you moved to Brunswick, on my mail route. You are in my thoughts and prayers and you have my deepest sympathy.

"RZ" was one of the most remarkable people I have had the honor of knowing. My condolences to Willie and the family. I don't know if it is possible to have lived a more fulfilled life than he did.

You will be missed and remembered!

Very sad news for the music world and especially New Brunswick Drummers who had the pleasure of meeting him. Musicians everywhere will never forget Bob Zildjian and the sounds he created with the most innovative cymbals in the world. We will always " hear the Difference " and my choice will always be SABIAN. A True Legend and innovator and a " Cymbal of New Brunswick pride & excellence" . Rest in the Peace you created and well deserve. Thank You Mr. Zildjian . We will always hear your legacy in our music . Your sound will be heard worldwide til the end of time. Until then we will keep time with the magic you made for us to play with. Well Done RZ !
