ROY HARRY ANDERSON Obituary
ANDERSON, Roy Harry 84, of Beverly, Massachusetts, passed away Monday, June 4 after a lengthy and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. Born and raised in Attleboro, Massachusetts, to the late Olga and Harry Anderson, Roy graduated from Attleboro High School in 1952 and went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration at Bryant College in just two years. He began his career with the YMCA in Attleboro then moved on to Somerville where he met his future wife, Sally Matheson, and they married in 1962. A YMCA man for his entire career, he later moved to Beverly and served as Director of the Danvers Community YMCA for 33 years until he retired in 1999. Under his leadership, the YMCA grew, and in 2003, the Roy H. Anderson Gymnasium was dedicated to the man who helped build the YMCA into the institution it is today. Roy's love of people and serving his community led to many lifelong friendships and associations. In 1966 he joined Rotary, where he served as President from 1972-1973, Sergeant-at-Arms, and in 1973 he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. Roy was a dedicated Mason for 57 years and achieved the level of Master Mason. In 1966, Roy and Sally purchased a home on Bakers Island in Salem, Massachusetts and many of their greatest friendships were formed in this small summer community. Never able to leave his love of service behind, even on weekends, Roy served two terms as President of the Bakers Island Association and was instrumental in hiring the first private caretakers when the Coast Guard vacated the property in 1972. He loved to fish and spend time with his many friends on the Island during the summer months. Roy loved to travel, whether just for a drive with Sally and Meredith around the North Shore, to the White Mountains, or to one of the many Rotary conventions he and Sally attended all over the world. His generous spirit touched many individuals and charities throughout the community. Roy's compassionate nature and warm smile were always welcome when he visited friends at local hospitals and nursing homes to deliver everything from the local paper to milkshakes. In addition to his loving wife of 57 years, Sally Anderson, Roy is survived by daughter Meredith Anderson and her companion Gary Marshall of Beverly, brother Earle C. Anderson and his wife Pat of Attleboro, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. His funeral service will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, BEVERLY, Friday, June 15, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours are Thursday June 14, 2018 from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Danvers. Contributions may be made in his name to the Bakers Island Memorial Fund or the Danvers Community YMCA. Information, directions, condolences at: www.campbellfuneral.com.
