RUTH STOREY STUART FELTON Obituary
FELTON, Ruth Storey Stuart 86, of Wenham, formerly of Prides Crossing, Essex, and Boston, died on June 4, 2016 at Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Born November 8, 1929 in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Richard C. and the late Mabel (Thayer) Storey, and the sister of Bayard T. Storey of Philadelphia and the late Richard C. Storey, Jr. She was the wife of the late Cornelius Conway Felton and the late Harborne Wentworth Stuart. She was actively involved in education, medicine, and many charitable organizations. She was a graduate of St. Timothy's School in Maryland, and a member of the Radcliffe College class of 1950, completing her bachelor's degree in 1969. She earned her master's degree in higher education administration from Northeastern University in 1971. As a former teacher and tutor, she valued education, calling it "one of the most important things" in life. She joined the Northeastern University Board of Trustees in 1981 and served on many committees, including a time as director of the National Council. She was elected to lifetime trustee emerita status in 2005. Her interest in science and medicine led her to volunteer for much of her adult life at Brigham and Women's Hospital (and its predecessor, the Boston Lying-In Hospital). In particular, she devoted her energy and skill for nearly 20 years to the former Cervical Clinic. She was appointed the first female trustee, serving on various committees, including the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Advisory Committee and the Care Improvement Council. She was also a corporator of Boston Biomedical Research Institute. She was a tireless supporter of numerous organizations including Shore Country Day School, Dexter School, Brooks School, Groton School, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She was a member of the Corporation of the Winsor School and a trustee of St. Timothy's School. Mrs. Felton was a past president of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, a member of the Chilton Club, Vincent Club, Junior League of Boston, Myopia Hunt Club, and Singing Beach Club. She was a former Senior Warden at St. John's Episcopal Church and in the summer attended Emmanuel Church in Manchester-By-The-Sea. In addition to her brother, she is survived by her four children Ruth S. (James) Ritchie, Elizabeth S. (Samuel) Hallowell, Claire S. (Neil) Roth and Harborne W. (Cathy) Stuart, Jr., three step-children C. Conway (Sallie) Felton III, Alexander A. (Cathy) Felton and Mary C. (William) Loring, ten grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 9, 2016 in St. John's Episcopal Church, 705 Hale Street, Beverly Farms, MA at 11 A.M. Arrangements are by the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Emmanuel Church, Manchester-by-the-Sea, or St. Timothy's School, Stevenson, MD.
