1929 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
CORCORAN, Sandra Passed away on February 25, 2016 at the age of 101 at hospice in Barnstable. She was born in Kentucky to Fred G. and Loretta Hilvert, and grew up in Phoenix, Arizona in the now historic Hilvert House built by her father in 1929. In 1935, when young women were generally excluded from higher education, Sandra was graduated from the College of New Rochelle with a degree in mathematics. She then went to New York City where she lived at the landmark Barbizon Hotel, then a residence for career-minded young women, and did modeling work. Eventually she returned to Arizona where she met Kenneth F. Corcoran of Brockton at the Phoenix Country Club. They were married in 1944. Sandra had a keen mind for business and she enjoyed investing in and following the stock market. She was an avid reader and loved bridge and golf. She played in the nine-holers golf group well into her eighties. While living in Boston, she did volunteer work that promoted the welfare of women and children, as well as modeling at the Ritz Carlton to raise funds for charity. Sandra lived in Boston, John's Island in Vero Beach, and Osterville. She was a member of John's Island, Wianno and Oyster Harbors, the latter for 65 years. She had many fond memories of Oyster Harbors when the hotel was in operation, including dining and dancing at the hotel's nightclub. Sandra was predeceased by her husband and three sisters, Mary Elizabeth, Patricia and Cleo. She is survived by her son, Kenneth F. Corcoran, Jr. and his wife Karen, and by her daughter Constance Corcoran Miller of San Fransisco. Sandra also leaves her three granddaughters of whom she was very proud: Elizabeth, Chrissy, and Charlotte, and their spouses, as well as four beautiful great granddaughters, Caroline, Abbie, Millie, and Langdon. A memorial Mass will be held on July 22, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Church, Osterville. Burial will be private. If you wish to make a donation in Sandra's memory, please consider the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. For online condolences, please visit www.doanebealames.com.
