When I think of the most influential figure of my undergraduate years, it has to be my fine arts tutor, Seymour Slive. One day he took our little band of junior-year tutees into the hushed inner sanctum of the Fogg's print room to examine two Dutch 17th century etchings: "Which is Rembrandt? Which is school of Rembrandt?" I hadn't a clue, but the point of course was to train our eyes. He was a master teacher. I feel to this day so very honored to have studied under Professor Slive. We all did.

So sorry i learned of Seymour's death this late. I remember Seymour as wonderfully gracious to everyone he encountered. Many years ago, during a reception at the Boston Psychological Center for Women, where Zoya & my wife then worked, my 6 year-old Julia (now 38) strode up to Seymour, looked down at her feet, looked up at him & announced proudly,"These are my party shoes!" Seymour looked down at his Harvard-professor Hush Puppies, looked at my daughter,& replied,"These are MY party shoes!" Amen. Samuel Adams (Sam) Frederick

Dear Zoya:

Though I only met you briefly at the Harvard Commencement where your husband was honored, I could see that you and he were surrounded by a loving and vibrant extended family, and many friends and well-wishers. I know they will give you comfort in the days ahead. Your husband was a great gift to countless students.

Dear Zoya and Family, I'm so sorry. Seymour was a dear, dear man--a scholar, a gentleman, a dear friend, and a genuinely lovely person. He is sorely missed already. May he rest in peace, and may you be consoled by the love of family and friends and by sweet memories of our departed Seymour. Deepest sympathies and warmest regards. Bob

Dear Zoya and Family: Yesterday I mailed Seymour a letter which I'd been meaning to write ever since I saw him (at a considerable distance) being honored during the recent Harvard Commencement. I had wanted to tell him congratulations but sadly I learn I wrote too late. My condolences and deepest sympathy to you all, Sally Kuhn
