SUSAN (FORREST) JOHNSON Obituary
JOHNSON, Susan (Forrest) 68, of Wellfleet died peacefully at her home on Long Pond Road in Wellfleet on Saturday, September 17, surrounded by loving family and friends. The cause was complications of multiple sclerosis. Born in Winchester, Susan was the fourth of eight children of the late James and Marian Forrest. She grew up in Stoneham, graduated from Stoneham High School, and married her classmate Robert Johnson in 1969. They moved to Reading, where they raised their two children. Diagnosed with MS in her late 20s, Susan lived an active life for over 40 more years in spite of the physical challenges her condition imposed, demonstrating remarkable strength, grace and courage. She enjoyed being a chaperone for her children's school field trips and volunteered at the Pine Street Inn serving Boston's homeless men and women. She was active in St. Agnes Catholic Church in Reading where she was a member of the choir. "She had the most beautiful singing voice," said her son, Josh. In 1999 she moved to her "magical place" in Wellfleet. Here she lived the remainder of her life, embracing the beauty of her surroundings and the community. She enjoyed telling stories on her back deck with family and friends. She was an avid reader and patron of the town library, and served as a volunteer reader at the Wellfleet Elementary School. Throughout her life, Susan was a passionate lover of nature and shared that passion with her children. She grew spectacular flower gardens and loved feeding the birds in her yard and gazing at the full moon. Always radiating beauty, humor and class, Susan had a gift for making people feel comfortable and at ease. She adored her five grandchildren and had a special relationship with each one. Susan is survived by her four sisters, Kathy Connors of Wellfleet, Jane Franke of Wellfleet, Mary Ellen Dion of Lebanon, N.H. and Deborah Hopkins of Eastham; by two brothers, James Forrest of Costa Rica and Kevin Forrest of Montana; by her daughter, Erin Mitchell of Wellfleet, and her son, Joshua Johnson of Boston; by her former husband, Robert; and by five grandchildren, Emma O'Dell, Caleb Mitchell, Lilyana Johnson, August Johnson and Cecilia Johnson. Another brother, Timothy Forrest, predeceased her. A memorial service for Susan will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Wellfleet Congregational Church, 200 Main St. For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com
