Still thinking of you till this day! You left an imprint on my heart that I will never forget

Hard to believe it has been 13 years since Wally has passed. He is still sorely missed by all the Salesians who knew and worked with him. He helped create thousands of good memories to the youth of East Boston with his work in the Salesian Boys & Girls Club. In terms of working with and sometimes disciplining youth, he was much loved and the best Salesian I have known.

Dee, Janae, Jillian, & Family,
Although I never had the honor to meet Wally personally, I felt like I knew all about him and his life through all the smiles and stories Darlene shared with me those many days at Hammersmith.
All the entries here and on facebook only confirm that he truly was and is a hero to so many. We have all been blessed by the Bowe Family through Dee and Wally.
God Bless You..

To the Bowe Family,
I want to say I am sorry for your loss. Wally was always there for us kids back in the day, why because he cared as we were in his hands at the Salesian away from our homes from our parents. It was alot of fun there, and all of us then did not know the impact that would be so important today by his guidence. I think alot of the words that are being sent to you are great. It will be the great memories within family and friends that will always keep him there by your side in spirit. God Bless Wally Bowe, you were an inspiration to us all.

February 4, 2010

Darleen and family,
As its been said a thousand times over, words cannot decribe your loss. I've known Wally since I was 6 and I'm now 41. He was more like a second father than a big brother even though I didn't realize it then. His mentoring and leadership made ALOT of people who they are. From the early days at the Salesians to his latest at the Umana. Its funny how most of the older people who knew Wally commented on seeing younger people and realized that they were us 10-20-or 30 years ago. Thats a legacy that you as his family and us as freinds should and are proud of.
Remembering gym hockey, traveling to other boys clubs, swimming at Don Bosco, and football on Sundays mornings, he will be missed by many, but as we all speak of our own memories, he will never be forgotten.

THANK YOU WALLY,

Sincerely,
Robert & Lisa Manganello & family.

Darlene and Family

I too first met Wally over 30 years ago at the Salesians Boys Club, and then years later, I had the pleasure of working with him at Savio High School. Although many years had passed in between, Wally never changed one bit from the dedicated, caring, hard working, selfless guy I knew growing up. In a day and age when role models are so hard to find, we were very fortunate to have a true one right in our midst. The outpouring of affection clearly shows that Wally, like George Bailey, truly did lead a wonderful life. He will be missed.

Wally don't know where to start words can't describe what kind of person you were, growing up at the Boy's Club in the 80's were probably the best time's of my life and for many others that grew up there i learned many thing's from you playing hockey flag football and many other sports but the one thing i learned most about you is to respect others the way you would want to be respected. My family is devestated from this we remember the days when you where living in Winthrop with your Mom and sister and having cookouts in the backyard. Thanks for all the memories and leading me in the right direction when i was a kid.

Wally, I sit here and think over the 30+ years of having the privilege of knowing you. All the things that you taught many of us. I can say without a doubt that you made a great impact on the youth. You always went above and beyond to help us. YOU WERE THE SALESIANS BOYS CLUB You were the big brother that some never... had. All I can say is WOW. The young generation of today will never get the chance of having you to guide them. I am a better person today because I knew you, and listened to your guidance. THANK YOU!!! My heart goes out to the Bowe family. Wally you will be missed

Valerie,

I did not make the connection. I knew your Brother as Wally. He helped me with my daughter Juanita get thru the Salegian and Savio yrs. He was the go to guy that you could count on. Juanita received strength, and hope from his rays of encouragement as she was an only child raised by a single Mom.
I know there are many less fortunate children that will immensely miss his endearing mentoring spirit.
I am so very saddened by your loss. He touched many lives and improved those moments.
Our prayers and thoughts go out to you and your family.
Please accept and extend our deepest condolences to his Wife, Children and loved ones. The Ivers Family, Wayland, MA

The world definitely lost a great person. I've known Wally over 30 years, and he taught me everything from lifting weights to being a good person. For all the kids who were part of Salesian in the 80's know exactly what I'm talking about. Going undefeated on the traveling gym hockey team for 2 years, to going on camping trips, playing manhunt in Ipswich, to going to trips to Nahant Beach then back to Salesian for summer night volleyball. Wally, I don't ever think you'd ever know how much of a big part of my life you really were.

With Love always

All I have to say about Mr.Bowe is that he was a great teacher and role model to me and my classmates he cared for us like we were his own children.Speaking for myself and my classmates, Mr.Bowe we love you and miss you already. God needed another angel and he took a great man, but he didn't just take Wally he took a piece of our hearts as well. So to the Bowe family I say with deep sorrow that it's a horrible loss for them and it feels like a family member as well.

I just heard the news today...What a tragic loss to Wally's family & the community. I remember like thousands of others, going to Salesian's since I was 7yrs old...& Wally ALWAYS there for all of us! Straight through my years at Savio & beyond. Wally was one of the greatest mentors any kid could ask for, & a little of him will live on forever in me & everyone he touched...Rest Easy "Wally Gator"...you will be sorely missed...Derek

I was a member of the first team Wally ever coached in the 70's, the "Wally's Gators" bombardment (dodgeball) team of the Salesian Boys Club. I was 8 and Wally was 16 years old. Even then you could tell he had a gift like Don Bosco for working with young people. He is one of the reasons I became a high school teacher and coach. I really enjoyed the many years we worked together at Savio. It was an honor to call Wally my friend. Darlene and family I am so sorry for your loss.

Not how did he die, but how did he live?
Not what did he gain, but what did he give?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.
Not, what was his church, nor what was his creed?
But had he befriended those really in need?
Was he ever ready, with word of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say,
But how many were sorry when he passed away.

Our deepest sympathy to Jillian, Janay, and Darlene. Wally is missed by all who knew him.

Mr.Bowe was an inspirtion to me and many others..Me && Mr.Bowe have so many memmories"Like when i used to go late to classes because he would stop me in the middle of the hallways and talk some sense into me.He was the most loving person i ever met .He always called me his daugther ,& he was always talking about his daugthers and his wife to me he always told me how wonderful and how much he loves them.He was the one always making my day, always reminding me how succesful i am going to be.&how much he belives in me..But i never got to tell him how much he has inspired me he really truly has changed my life completely Like when i heard about his death i went running to my big sister so she could teach me how to pray(muslim prayers)And ihave never prayed but while i was praying i cried and cried and prayed for him to rest in peace. ,when i first heard of his death it was impossible to me because just two days ago he was walking around the hallways smiling at me and letting me know to keep doing the right thing .And till this day i still cant belive mr.bowe is not with us no more.i dont think anything will ever be the same at the Mario Umana Middle School Academy.

East Boston and its youth have lost one of their greatest champions. Wally was a mentor to all kids young & not so young. He respected kids and was so respected & loved in return. I don't know if he even realized the impact he had on so many. East Boston will never be the same again. Those of us whose lives he's touched have truly been blessed. Gone too soon!!!! My heart is broken for the Bowe famly, Darlene, Janae & Jillian and for all the youth who will never be graced by Wally's influence and for all of those who have. Rest in peace, Wally!!!

Wally was a "UNIQUE" individual who had so much love for his community and the children of yesterday and today. He worked diligently to make the life of a child happier, safer, secure (if it was to give them a ride home or money for a soda) that is what he did and who he was. The smile on the children's faces meant the world to him and he knew he was fulfilling the job he was meant to do. Darlene you married your soulmate (not many of us can say that) and best friend. My heart is so heavy for your loss. He was a great husband, father and role model for so many children as well as adults. I am so blessed that I had the extreme pleasure to work with him and see the difference he made with the community of children he loved so much. He touched us all in so many different ways.... Stories will be told, tears will be shed and a lifetime of memories will bond you all together. May GOD give you all the strength throughout this difficult time in your lives... Wally is the NEWEST and BRIGHTEST ANGEL watching from above and I think he would be so overwhelmed with the outpour of love he has been receiving..... Wally was "ONE OF A KIND".... Darlene, Jillian and Janae be strong, he will protect and give you the courage to get through this sad time. God Bless -- Luv you

Bowe Family,
Wally has touched lives that a 1000 men couldn't match. If he only had one encounter with a person, he would be forever remembered by them with his kind ,gentle and caring manner. I am so happy to have known him for all the years I did and that my son also had the privilege to do the same. He made it less worrisome for me to go work and to be a single mom because when Shawn ( He nick-named him Vader it has stuck all these years later ) went to the Salesian I knew he was in good hands. What a Wonderful Man!!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

My deepest condolences to all families Wally touched. So many people have had the pleasure in knowing such a great man. When I was young and went to the Salesian Boys Club, Wally was my coach for the traveling gym hockey team. He along with Peter Bochino showed me the ropes in proper weight training. That meant alot to me. I was never that good at sports. So when those guys helped, it helped me come into my own. And for that I thank you Wally.

My deepest sympathies to the entire Bowe family. I have many fond memories of Wally while I was growing up at the Salesians. Many of us came from single parent households and Wally was someone who was a positive male figure in our lives, someone we could look up to and aspire to be like. He will be greatly missed.

One of the best men I ever knew. Wally was a true "Salesian" who loved, cared for, and respected all young people. He and Dave were the heart of the Salesian Club for so many years and influenced many young people. He will be sorely missed. Fitting, I guess, that he died on the Feast Day of St. John Bosco, a man Wally imitated so well in his charity, kindness, and love for youth.
