WILLIAM O'TOOLE Obituary

O'TOOLE, William F. MD Died peacefully on December 30, 2015, surrounded by his family at the McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich. He was 82 years old and rejoins the love of his life, the late Dorothy Johnson O'Toole. Bill is survived by his five children: William O'Toole and his wife Jacqueline of Duxbury, Tom O'Toole and his fiancee Maria Luce of Sagamore Beach, Jean McManus and her husband Burt of Canton, Elisabeth da Silva and her husband Tony of Duxbury, and Peter O'Toole and his wife Meredith of Centerville. Bill was the loving grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather of 3. Bill was the brother of Joan Carr and her husband Edwin of Chestnut Hill, the late Helene Curran and her husband Tom of Norwood, as well as two dear siblings lost in childhood, Ruthie and Tom. Bill grew up in Norwood, MA and spent summers in Padanaram and Wild Harbor. He learned to sail on Buzzards Bay, and shared his love of boats and the ocean with his children and grandchildren on Lewis Bay as a member of the Hyannis Yacht Club. He remained an avid sailor into his 80s. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and Johns Hopkins Medical School. He was a dedicated physician for over 40 years. His many professional achievements include early research into what are now called stem cells, teaching at Georgetown and Harvard Medical Schools, designing innovative computer systems for pathologists, and most important to him, serving as Chief of Pathology for over 30 years at Cape Cod Hospital. Bill will be most remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, and grandfather, and by countless others as a true friend, mentor, and advisor whose generosity and wisdom were unparalleled. Bill will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Arrangements are being handled by John-Lawrence Funeral Home in MARSTONS MILLS. Visiting hours will be held at Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 South Main Street, Centerville, on Tuesday, January 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Victory on Wednesday, January 6 at 11:30 a.m. Interment immediately following at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in William's name may be made to the McCarthy Care Center, 73 Service Road, E. Sandwich, MA 02537 or Smile Train at Smiletrain.org or 800-932-9541. Not sure what to say?

Next to him at ND and Hopkins because of our last names, Bill had to put up with me, a Puerto Rican nerd (before nerds existed), and my laboratory mishaps. We were fraternity brothers at Phi Beta Pi and although never close friends we were always friendly to each other. I am very sorry for his passing but happy he had such a productive and full life and that he had such a numerous and loving family. May he rest in peace. My condolences and prayers. Dr. Francisco Olazabal.

I have fond memories of Dr. O'Toole from his early days as a resident in pathology
at the N.E. Deaconess Hosp from which he attained Staff position in the lab. I had
the distinct pleasure of working with him
at the Deaconess and later at Cape Cod as
a laboratory consultant.

I feel I lost a family member with his passing. My last contact was a telephone
call 2 days before Christmas wishing Lee
and myself A Merry Christmas.

I only knew Bill since he came to laurelwood but having taken care of him in that time he quickly became a favorite. I will remember talking with him about sailing and lewis bay- even music as he was listening to it frequently. He will be fondly remembered and was always a pleasure to talk with even when he may not have been feeling well. Very sorry for your loss .
