1920 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
ROBERTS, William F. Born in Rockland, Massachusetts, on July 20, 1920, William Francis "Bill" Roberts died on January 1, 2014, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late William Benjamin Roberts and Mary Jane (Prindible) Roberts. Bill graduated from Rockland High School in 1938 and received an A. B. from Harvard in 1942. He was commissioned in the U.S. Army Air Corps in September, 1943. From January through July, 1944, he flew 46 missions with the 456th Bomb Group in Italy as navigator of a B24 Liberator. He received several combat awards, including the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for outstanding courage and professional skill in guiding his seriously damaged and unescorted bomber to a safe landing at his base through severe adverse weather under continued attack from enemy fighters. After WW II ended, Bill returned home to Rockland. He enjoyed a successful career as an architectural engineer, designing many premier restaurants in New England and on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. He was married for over 66 years to his high school sweetheart, the late Elizabeth Mary (FitzGerald) Roberts, with whom he had four children: the late William F. ("Biff") Roberts, Jr. (m. Constance Kinnealey), J. Michael Roberts (m. Holly Arnold), Steven A. Roberts, and Lisa A. Roberts. He is the beloved "Pa" of 10 grandchildren: Jeffrey W. Roberts (m. Cara Fauci), Meghan Roberts Eddy (m. Wayne Eddy), Andrew W. Roberts, Rebecca Roberts Jurgela (m. Mark Jurgela), Alison Roberts Thurston (m. Joseph Thurston), Brian B. Roberts (m. Danielle Marcarelli), Kevin B. Roberts, and the late Erin A. Roberts, Matthew W. Roberts and Mark W. Roberts. He enjoyed having his children, grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, extended family and friends visit at his summer house on Sagamore Beach, where he was a member for almost 50 years of the North Sagamore Beach Association. Visiting hours will be from 3 PM until 7 PM on January 5, 2014 at Sullivan Funeral Home, 45 East Water St. in ROCKLAND, Massachusetts with a Funeral Mass at St. Mary's of the Sacred Heart Church, 392 Hanover St., Rte 139 in Hanover at 11 AM on January 6, 2014. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation, PO Box 310 Fort Atkinson, WI 53538 in memory of his granddaughter, Erin Roberts, or to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton, 199 Reedsdale Road, Milton, MA 02186 in memory of his son, Biff Roberts.
