BARBARA KENT TREVETT

BARBARA TREVETT Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 16 to Mar. 18, 2013.
TREVETT, Barbara K. Research Advocate, Family Woman, Media Relations Professional. Barbara Kent Trevett, a former resident of Winchester, passed away on March 12th in San Antonio, Texas, at age 68, after living with ovarian cancer for eight years. A passionate believer in the power of research, Barbara participated in twelve clinical trials in her four years in Texas and encouraged other patients to do the same. She felt it was her duty to the next generation to help test new approaches to clinical care even while fighting her own disease. She brought to this struggle a positive attitude, engaging humor and an overwhelming purpose to defeat cancer. She rallied other patients at the START Center, where she was treated, to adopt a "can do" attitude in their own fights. Barbara is survived by her husband Kenneth, the President and CEO of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, and three children: Kimberly Gray, and husband, Stacey, of Bar Harbor, Maine; Dennison Trevett, and wife, Jenifer, of Winchester, MA; Tanya Viti, and husband, Michael, of Winchester, MA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Mark and Jordan Pelletier, Morgan and Caroline Trevett, and Olivia, Ella, and Sienna Viti. She is also survived by four brothers and eight nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her parents, Hudson Earle Kent and Barbara Burt Kent. She was zealous in her love for her family, encouraging them both to achieve and to be good citizens. She was mentor and friend to them all. Barbara was born in Providence, Rhode Island in l944. She spent her formative years in Rumford, Maine before receiving her undergraduate degree from American University in Washington, DC and her Masters Degree in Urban Planning from Boston University. Barbara had a highly productive, thirty year career as a medical/science writer and media relations professional. Among other issues she handled, Barbara was the chief spokesperson for The Jackson Laboratory in l989 when a major portion of the facility burned down, attracting international press attention. Because of her responsiveness to members of the news media and her insistence on not "spinning" the facts, she was honored with the creation of the Barbara Trevett Fund for the Future by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing, to which memorial contributions may be directed in lieu of flowers (CASW, P.O. Box 910, Hedgesville, WV 25427). The fund supports educational programs for journalists about innovative science. A service of remembrance will be held on Wednesday, March 20th at the Winchester Unitarian Society, 478 Main Street, Winchester, MA at 3:00 PM. Barbara will be buried in Winchester, Massachusetts where the Trevetts first met and were married. Ken: joe Le me know of the very sad news. I'm so sorry. She was a pistol, and her energy infused everyone around her. Some of my most favorite memories were the summer seminars in Bar Harbor and spending time with you two.

Thinking of you,

Time disappears too quickly. In our High School class yearbook, Barbara was described as having " mischief glints within her eyes and a spark of laughter that will never die." Sad to read of your passing, Barbara. Condolences to your family. Terry Martin
