MONSIGNOR MICHAEL F. GRODEN Obituary
GRODEN, Monsignor Michael F. 77, of Scituate, passed away peacefully on Christmas, surrounded by family, after a brief illness. Msgr. Groden was the son of the late Dr. Henry E. and Ellen (Buckley) Groden of Belmont. Loving brother to sisters Mary Webb (deceased) of Scituate, Kathleen Meskell of Concord, and Ellen Dalton of Hancock, NH, and "Uncle Mike" to many adoring nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. Msgr. Groden was a graduate of Boston College High School, Boston College and St. John's Seminary in Brighton, MA, where he earned a Master's Degree in Theology. Following his ordination in 1965, he served as a parish priest at St. Joseph's in Roxbury before being appointed by His Eminence Cardinal Richard Cushing to found and direct the Planning Office for Urban Affairs in 1968. He held the position of Executive Director for 35 years, and under his leadership the Planning Office was involved with designing and developing 26 major housing developments in and around Greater Boston, creating nearly 3,000 units of affordable housing. In 1998, he was appointed Prelate of Honor with the status of Monsignor by His Holiness Pope John Paul II. Msgr. Groden's final parish assignment before his retirement was at St. Cecilia Parish in Boston's Back Bay where he served as the beloved pastor from 1989 to 2003. Known as "Fr. Mike" to many, Msgr. Groden was an extraordinary advocate for the poor, always standing up for the most vulnerable among us. Guided by the strength of his convictions, he promoted social justice in everything he did. His commitment to justice came first – always – and his contribution to improving this world will be sorely missed. Msgr. Groden will be Lying in State on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 in St. Cecilia's Church, 18 Belvidere Street, Back Bay, Boston, MA from 4-8 p.m. A Concelebrated Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia's Church, with His Eminence Sean Cardinal O'Malley the Principal Celebrant. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment private. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to St. Cecilia Parish, 18 Belvidere Street, Boston, MA 02115, Boston College High School, 150 William T.
