JOHN A. HAYES M.D. Obituary
HAYES, John A., MD Professor Emeritus of Pathology Boston University, President New England Rugby Referee's Society John Alsop Hayes, MD, died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the age of 88. John is survived by his loving children Jonathan; Christian, his wife Beth; Rhiannon; Patrick; Anwen Robinson, her husband Lynn; grandchildren Gaelen, Arundel, Gwylan Miguelez and Christian Jr., John and Liza Hayes. John is also survived by his brother Michael, sister-in-law Janet, their children Matthew and Helen, of Newport, Wales and his children's beloved mother Iola Hayes. Born in Maesteg, Wales, John served in the British Army before studying at Bristol University Medical School in Avon, England, eventually specializing in pathology. John then worked residencies at Cornell University and Boston City Hospital, marrying Iola Whomsley, also of Maesteg, Wales, in Manhattan in 1959. John went on to teach in Bristol, England, and then the University of West Indies, Jamaica. His pulmonary research took him to Toronto, and then back to Boston in 1969. John became a Fellow, Royal College of Pathologists (London) in 1975. John taught at Boston University Medical School and served as a visiting lecturer for both Harvard and Tufts Medical Schools while working as Associate Director at the Mallory Institute of Pathology. John continued to lecture as he assumed the role of Chief of Pathology at the VA Hospital in Jamaica Plain, while Emeritus Professor of Pathology at BU Medical School. John is remembered as a man of integrity and a good friend to many, who enjoyed travel, experiencing other cultures, classical music, opera and ornithology. John, an avid sportsman who swam for Wales in his youth and loved cricket, also harbored a lifelong passion for the sport of rugby and spent much of his free time on the rugby pitch; first as a player, as a referee for over 30 years, then as President of the New England Rugby Referee's Society. Many ruggers have expressed their broad affection for him. Affable and engaging, John was quickly embraced by those he met and was widely loved by friends and family alike. Everyone enjoyed sharing a beer and a chat with John. He will be deeply missed. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Agatha's Church, 432 Adams St., Milton, MA 02186, followed by a reception.
